I saw a tutorial from Switched to Linux in which he gave an overview of how he uses cPanel to host his own email.

It costs him, but his point was that he felt it was worth it.

What kind of boggles me is the "chicken-egg" dilemma -- doesn't he need an email to create an account for that cPanel and the hosting in the first place?

Unless he's receiving a bill to a mailing address and has a phone number to identify the account (which still require email) I don't get how he's pulling this off.

What am I missing?

Ofcourse he need an email account to receive the invoices and to sign up the hosting account , however for such purpose you can use email service providers like Gmail , Hotmail etc.. however when it comes to representing a business which has a website e.g. abc.com and if you are the owner of the business then the email ID should be professional like [email protected] not [email protected]
