Here are some tips on how to choose a good domain name for your business.

1. Most Important:

Your domain should be easy to spell and easy to pronounce, and easy to remember.

2. Avoid this:

Avoid making your domain too much the same as other domains, nor violating other trademarks

3. The .com” domain name:

The .com domain name is the most popular, and would be difficult to find one still available. If you are going to specialize in selling in your country, use your country's name, like .co.za for South Africa.

4. Discover or brand:

Are you going to rely on search engines? Increase your search rankings by using easy words or phrases that people would use. If you are focusing on paid search listings, then you need to create a brand that people would easily remember.

5. Just create it:

Most domain names are already taken, so create your own words. There are websites where you can find out whether your words are available or not. Your domain server will also help you.

Thanks, for sharing..! I love #3 because .com is the most interesting and all users are paying attention to .com domain. I remember, I used to access to a wrong address of a new social media network call tsu.co since I used tsu.com. Well, the most recommend is .com. Another interesting is keyword domain since it give us the bonus traffic of exactly match keyword. But However, even keyword domain is great but to make sure it is not too long.

A lot of .com domains are already taken. In my opinion, .com and .co would both work perfectly for a business. :)

A few other pointers:

1.) Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. This also helps you remember it as stated in step 1.

2.) I wouldn't recommend adding hyphens in the domain as that also makes it hard to remember and seems unoriginal.

Great article! :)

Hello

To register a domain name with a future, prioritize and work the brand by branding and marketing.

The EMD domains although at first may have a greater advantage in SEO, then do not honor the mark.

I agree with you, It should be short so people can type it and spell it correctly and easily, And it should be different from other domain otherwise you'll face many issues..Choosing a domain name is not that easy, you should be careful of what you are going to choose, Do not name your domain something that is too long, try avoiding that and everything will be fine, Because sometimes the names attract traffic / visitors.

Thank you about the nice steps about how to choose a good domain. In addition, finding a domain name that's easy to type is critical to online success. If you use slang or words with multiple spellings, it might be harder for customers to find your website.

Point 3 is worthy of note. The other day I wanted to launch a new website and I used one of the domain name generating site which helped me a lot. I tried continually for over 4 hours and discovered that there are still a handful of very easy to remember and attractive domain names ending in .com still available for grab.I quickly grabbed the one I needed in my cart and bought.I'll launch one soonest. If you need one, know the niche and do a simple search of most popular words used in that area.Be as simple as possible don't go all complex.

Nice Tips! :) I would like to add some more tips here -

1. Make sure you will choose the domain name related to your site. That is if you would like to create the site related to games then from it's name, end-user should get the purpose of the site.

2. Make sure to choose the domain extension carefully, If you are developing the educational site then the extension should be .edu so it will clarify the use of your website.

3. You can use country specific extensions too.

4. Use the top rated keywords while assigning name to your website so it will help you to rank your website in SEO.

5. Domain name should be shot and sweet, easy to remember. :)

Very valuable information. In today's scenario, it is really difficult to get a unique name as most of the names already exist. We should do some serious brainstorming to come up with a name which will be easy for the search engine to show up in the result as well as people will also remember the name. Anyway, thanks for the tips. :)

Even for a local business, getting your own local domain AND a .com will be ideal as many may still mistype yourwebsite.co.uk as yourwebsite.com

I've came across many sites who were scam, for instance, I once saw a site called favebook.com which had the same interface as the original facebook, but it was built to steal your login information, so making your domain sound legit is the best thing a site owner can do, and if you hit the traffic you dreamed of, watch out from fake domains under your name, if you chose .com others can choose .org which is a problem that would conflict people!

I do disagree with point #3. I think you need the TLD for the location you are selling to, if the .com is available then that's a bonus as you can reserve the brand name and you don't have to worry about any legal fees (people saying you took their name).

Catchy could be like [.....]Webs.com or [....]hosts.com and it's easy to find some like Venus (planet) webs.com is available and that's catchy because of the song Venus, and you could base it around being hot or red. Could even base the design around a red theme. Loads of names and choices.

Country level domains are the next most preferable, in my opinion, where the .com version is not available. This is especially so where your website or brand has a local focus. An example of this is hotels.ng, an hospitality booking site with focus mainly in Nigeria.

Also, since almost every website have to rely on search engines for a large chunk of their traffic, choosing a domain name with niche-specific keyword will be a huge plus, as this will bring up the brand in search queries easily.

Wow nice tips :) I also want to add more and maybe it can help.

Avoid infringing trademark. You have to be careful because it's not whether you think your domain name could be confused. It's whether you think a judge in a jurisdiction, where a company might take legal action against you, would consider your domain name confusable.
This can also create brand confusion, which is hard for your brandability.

You should talk to an attorney or a legal professional if you have real concerns.

Trademark owners can attempt to sue a domain name owner, who's owning the domain legitimately and using it for business purposes, and that sucks.

I'm so glad I found this thread. It's been three months, my sister and I have been debating and haven't decided our domain name for our new business. Yes, we are thinking of the one that's easy to remember. But, how can we make sure if it's not taken yet? We really don't want disputes and trouble specially we are just started significant capital with the business. In case, anyone who has tried buying or making an offer to an owner of same domain name?
