That's a very broad question. Do you mean like an illustrator file, pre-press file, a photograph, etc.? Each file format offers something unique and beneficial. For example:

AI: Adobe Illustrator
AI files are vector files used by designers and commercial printers to generate files of different file formats and sizes.

EPS: Encapsulated Postscript
EPS files are most commonly used by designers to transfer an image or artwork, generally a vector file into another application.

PDF: Portable Document Format
A PDF is a universal file format that preserves/embeds the fonts, images, layout and graphics of any source document, regardless of the application used to create it.

I can continue with, PSD, JPG, GIF, TIF, PNG... What specifically are you trying to accomplish?

I would prefer PNG format instead of GIF or JPEG formats. Beacuse PNG can preserve the transparency of the image as well as it can be used for high quality images.PNG is best for using images on any websites.

I don't use PNG, the only format that I like is JPEG. However, until now I did not know PNG can preserve transperency and could be use for high quality images. I use JPEG for printing and publishing online.

If the images are for the Web or online use JPEG, PNG, or GIF.
If the images are for print, use TIFF.

Depends on what is the requirement, whether it is for web or print.

For websites if their are lots of images for loading the images faster on site, professionals use jpeg or gif. Because we can set the quality of images from high, medium or low while saving gif or jpg images.

If we want transparent background particularly for logo or some elements of images, we use PNG file format, which is also high quality.

For using favicon for website we use ICO file format.

For ebooks we use PDF formats.

I generally use JPG image file format this is the right format for those photo images which must be very small files, for example, for web sites or for email. JPG is often used on digital camera memory cards, but RAW or TIF format may be offered too, to avoid it.

In general I prefer .png images as they are higher quaility than jpg and allow transparency.

Although, PNG files are rather large, you can compress them with free to use online tools and make them half the size, whilst looking little quaility.

On the other hand, JPG images are already compressed, and further compression will only allow you to save 5-10% on the total image size, compared to half with PNG images.

I prefer JPEG simply because it has smaller file size.

The best option will always be PNG, it has a better quality and it allows you to have a render (an image without background). It's the most practical format nowadays.

G I F is the best
The GIF format is a type of bitmap, but unlike PNG, GIF
files are limited to a maximum palette of 256 colors. Essentially
each GIF image contains a preset ‘box of crayons' and there is
no way to truly mix those colors to make new colors.

GIF the best image format in 2017 ? You should look on new image format available like WebP : https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/faq#why_should_i_use_animated_webp
WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index.
