Why is cPanel so popular despite its high licensing cost?

Another reason is that most hosting providers use WHMCS as their billing system. When you configure WHMCS for the first time, it offers you to use cPanel by default, saying that you can choose other options later. These additional configurations take time and resources, so most providers end up using cPanel because it's much easier to use an already configured integration than make a new one.

Now, things have changed, and WHMCS no longer offers cPanel by default, but it did for many years before that, so the panel is still popular among old users. Old users pass on their experience to new ones, so the legacy of cPanel is still alive.

I switched to DirectAdmin back in 2018 when cPanel introduced its new prices. No regrets, f*k cPanel. I love DA

What was the most challenging when switching to DA? I'm contemplating doing it myself on a few personal projects...

I had no challenges when switching to DA. I think it's because, by then, I already had experience using different panels - cPanel, Plesk, ISPmanager, and VestaCP. So, it was just another control panel for me – the same concept with a different GUI.

DA gave me all the things and tools I needed from a control panel, I didn't feel any lack of functionality. The only thing I can mention is that in 2018, DA had a poor translation, so my team and I made a contribution to localizing it to different languages.

Today, I don't see any shortcomings in DA.
