I would think you would name your Domain according to the line of sales or business you are marketing or marketing to. As a small business owner I think a Domain name that goes with the name of my company. Do you think it depends on what you do such as owning a small local business, web hosting, or web design. I thought as someone who did web hosting selling space, you may have to be creative. I am thinking there are many people out there with the capability in web hosting, so you need to make yourself noticed more than the other. what do yo think?

Picking a memorable name is one of the biggest challenges when starting your site.

A descriptive name is appropriate to the topic and tells the visitors (or at least hints at) what they can expect. It does the marketing work for you as upon seeing the name people will know what your site is about. It's also good for getting targeted traffic from the search engines.

1. Make sure you will choose the domain name related to your site. That is if you would like to create the site related to games then from it's name, end-user should get the purpose of the site.

2. Make sure to choose the domain extension carefully, If you are developing the educational site then the extension should be .edu so it will clarify the use of your website.

3. You can use country specific extensions too.

4. Use the top rated keywords while assigning name to your website so it will help you to rank your website in SEO.

5. Domain name should be short and sweet, easy to remember. It should be easy to remember and catchy. I would suggest it should not be more than 20 o 25 characters. Because visitor should remember the name of your website easily. If it's too lengthy then no one remember it and as a result, no visitors, no money. Make sure it convey the purpose of your website.

Domain name popularity depends on factors like visitors, alexa, design, architecture, contents on the website , images and number of links pointing to your website, social site linking. You will need to review the all links connected to your website. You should remove the bad links that is spam links. Internal linking should be proper.

Hope this will help you.

Choosing a unique web domain will determine the future status of your business. I agree with you when you said that it should go along with what your business is. Others use their given names as their domain, while some use an acronym with a catchy word on it. Getting known in the vast array of internet world is not as easy as others think. There are lots of competition and you really do need to stand out. You will know if you got the right domain name to attract clients by comparing your present profit/ sales from the time you started your website. You can have a bar graph to evaluate your website in general, and that includes if you have chosen the right striking domain name.

I agree, I have choose to get into several business throughout the years. Sitting down with my husband deciding on a name for his business was not easy, we played with it for days. Finally we picked a name, it has done as well as a representation of the company and the quality of work that is provided. Now changing website and having to change up the domain name change effect the businesses traffic internet side at least. I have had to do this before for our business and it was such a hassle. A domain name is very important and your goal is to pick a great name that will get the attention of many.

You will know that your domain has an eye catching name if lots of people will email or call you and will try to buy it from you or threatened you that they own the domain name. I had a friend that experience that!

When people actually visit your website and you notice tons of traffic on the website, lol. Either that or people contacting you trying to buy the website from you, but I haven't heard of a lot of that happening besides the occasional "grab" from a random person grabbing a popular website domain and holding it for ransom or giving it back to whatever company, because they respect them, etc.

The issue is that most .com domain names are already taken and not .com extensions are rarely used due to the masses not using them.
This is a huge problem when trying to find a domain name.
Another issue is that you might accidentally register a domain that has been used for spamming or illegal things already. You can check this before purchasing tho with waybackmachine.

If you're creating a website for your business then keeping the name of the business as the domain name is optimal. That being said, picking a good name isn't easy. When choosing a name for your business you should find a name that is:

* Catchy
*Just long enough to be descriptive but not so long that it looks like a sentence
* Describes what you do exactly

This applies to when you make websites that are not related to your business as well.

I remember an incident where my brother needed a haircut fast because his school said that "he will not be allowed in school premises until he obeys the school's guidelines". We were looking for a barbershop and saw a shop that had "cut" in it's name and pictures of models on its board. We went inside to see that it was a photo studio. That's what happens when you pick the wrong name lol.
