Hi there.
I am just confused if servers. can also be hacked. I am aware that some of the websites can be hacked and heard of some incident. Does it mean servers can be that prone to hacking as well?
Please share thoughts about it and I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Joey

Servers definitely can be hacked.
There're too many variables to list be most hacks occur from:
Personal computer security. If your PC has a virus and you log in as root on your server...
Application vulnerabilities. Kernel updates are just as important as your control panel updates. Also update any firewalls, rootkit detectors, etc
Third party access. Rogue employees can cause damage.

Those are the top reasons why servers get hacked, IMO.

Servers can be hacked if there are n proper security walls like below -

1. Firewall on the server
2. Root admin
3. Privileged Access to the users
4. Spam monitoring and detecting tools or applications
5. IP block for particular countries are famous for the hacking
6. SSL Certificate
7. Lack of antivirus on the system from where you are accessing the server
8. Weak passwords

Servers can be hacked in some many ways. It depends on the hacker on what way he/she will be hacking the server.
If the hacker/attacker sees the vulnerabilities of the web server, this will be the time of taking advantage in hacking the server.
Once the hacker/attacker has gained access to the server, they will install malicious software and download unauthorized files and folders.
The types of Attacks the the hacker/attacker used against web servers are the following:
1. Denial of Service Attacks
2. Domain Name System Hijacking
3. Sniffing
4. Phishing
5. Pharming
6. Defacement
So I conclude that servers can be hacked and to protect that, the servers must have securities in order not to bypass attackers in hacking the server.

Hacker is one of among many problems of IT Department. Yes! This is because servers can be hacked. We can not blame them if they provide strict policy in our offices such as disabling access to the USB port, non-allowing to install programs unless by themselves, or even giving warnings not to click any attachment on emails with malicious content. Hackers has various ways and tools to let their prey fall into their traps.

Of course servers could definitely be hacked. However, hacking would require a lot of time and effort. Especially if the server is really protected well. That is why any servers that is formulated should be prepared thoroughly. That is one way of avoiding being hacked.

In common language, a web server is a program that stores files and makes them accessible via the internet. It can be attacked to access sensitive information from the files, execute commands or install malicious software. This may cause web server to crash making service unavailable, misdirecting traffic to the fake or malicious websites, fooling individuals to give their personal information, account nos., etc. leading to identity theft and worse of all, infecting your computer with a virus. We have heard of banks, financial institutions and government agencies experiencing hacking incidents in their systems.

Primary reason why servers can be hacked is due to lack of strict security or regular preventive measures adopted to prevent unauthorized access into the system. Samples of security measures include
* installing antivirus softwares and firewalls or scanning systems,
*patching the operating and web server systems to fix the bugs, as well as securing its installations and configurations, use of hard-to-guess pastwords,
*removing default and unused accounts, changing default ports and settings to custom port and settings.

Technical preventive measures have been discussed by earlier posts as shown above.

Recognizing the grave threat and ill effects brought by these attackers to their business, companies now are becoming wiser by adopting a good back-up system and installing safety measures to protect their security and their clients. Lately we have experienced notice from some of our supported companies requesting to change our passwords on their sites on a regular basis.

As far as I know, Servers can really be hacked. There's a time when my boss share some knowledge on how to handle servers, he give us a tip that everytime we operate the servers. After we are done with the operation, the computer must be lock, so that it wont get the attention of the hacker. Well, that's all I know.

In my personal opinion, a server can not be hacked and it depends on the level of server manager.
If server can be hacked then how Google or Facebook can be existed. :)

Hi everyone! I would like to share my insights regarding servers since we have tackled it on our COPROG 1 as one of our major subjects in Information and Technology course. As what I've learned a server can be hacked especially special tools or whatever used by the hackers. In general, no computer is one hundred percent secure, which is an impossible goal to achieve. But we can make it so secure as possible by following security guidelines. Basically, Firewall is imperative but you also need to know how to create rules for protection. IDS and IPS systems might help you too. If you have a network, security policies have to be set to rule the environment. I hope this will help! :)

Yes, servers can be hacked. There are lots of nerd people out there who are in one way or another could intrude your server. We have heard that many big companies encountered problems because their server was hacked. So, it is better have a regular back up of your data as well as put protection or shield on your software.
