For the average medium sized WordPress website 2Gb of ram should be more then enough, with a decent CPU and I/O Speed for fast loading times. Regarding requirements my suggestion would be 1-2Cores, 2Gb ram and around 5-20Gb storage should be more then enough, unless its a big website. You can use EasyEngine which will install wordpress with nginx.

No doubt that 2 GB RAM is sufficient to run medium sized WordPress sites but not only RAM, CPU and storage space is also a very important to run a e-commerce wordpress sites. For medium site their is a no problem but for big site it is a very important to check CPU, RAM and Storage Space.

1 to 2GB RAM is sufficient if you are going to use the various WordPress plugins like W3 total cache and WP super cache. Those plugins will minimize the memory usage of your website.
RAM requirement will be vary according to the extra plugins which you are going to use and the theme which you are going to install for your website. You will need to make sure that the RAM which you have currently have for your VPS can upgrade to the new version of the WordPress. You will need to study about the traffic on your website too.
If database is too vast then it will need more RAM.
So there are many factors which you will need to take into account while assigning the RAM.

All that depends on your traffic. Even a 524 MB RAM VPS can run wordpress, but the more traffic you have the more your website will demand. So for a start I would suggest choosing a provider that has easy upgrades for VPS plans, start small, atleast 1GB RAM and you can upgrade later if you feel it's not working.
And For wordpress, RAM Is not the big issue, processing power is, even with cache enabled still if your VPS has a low power processor you will still face challenges.

I'd say 1GB is enough but if you are using cPanel they recommend 2GB for the control panel and other system programs.

It depends, but it's better if you have a big storage of random access memory or (RAM) to prevent lagging and it's good for multitasking if you have a big RAM.
