People, ask questions about the difference between Cloud and Physical (Dedicated) Hosting. Many point attention to the fact that Cloud computing infrastructures are naturally scalable. True, but bare-metal server systems can also be scaled out in CPU, RAM and Storage. Well, scaling out CPU and RAM, requires a downtime and a physical upgrade, while the storage upgrades can be done without interruption of the services.

Anyway, do you guys look for a scalable hardware systems when you go for a dedicated server or you do money wise based choices?

Bare-metal servers are more better in that you control the server at the point you buy it and own it plus you can upgrade during off hours if needed, Cloud is just too not too sure for me, it is like is it really there or some imagination.

For servers which are hosting live applications or websites, it is advisable NOT to treat single bare-metal servers as Scalable. You can scale your infrastructure by adding additional hardware servers, however, you would not want to "scale" a single system and subject your users to unnecessary downtime and service interruption.

This would be a terrible administrative practice and should never be applied in a production environment.

I have found scale able servers a.k.a cloud server better than dedicated servers. You have to manually request for the upgrade of bare metal servers where as for cloud servers the configurations are already pre built in. Just buy the extra ram and click on pay. Walla you'r ram is upgraded. Moreover I'm into selling VPS for my clients and cloud server ensures me as soon as I am out of space I can buy extra space with any worry. So for me cloud is the future.

While I think cloud services are definitely on the upswing, I'm still locked into dedicated servers for the time being - simply because it most closely matches my hosting requirements.
