Why are .space or .science so cheap?

I get they're new domains, and this means that their usage is still low, making them a worse choice for SEO, but their price seems suspiciously low. Even extensions in a similar fashion like .racing have higher prices, and they're pretty much the only one you can get for less than 5 bucks for a two-year or three-year plan.
Plus, they sound pretty nice and would be fitting for many nerdy/geeky website, not to mention specialized websites that work in the same sector. Where does their price come from?

To me, I'm not a fan of long extension naming. I prefer the ones that are not more than 3letter words, and you will also found out that this 3letters domain naming is the most popular in the world.
It will be good for you if you are just starting and don't want to spend much money. But the biggest problem is that you will have to work more for traffic because it's a new extension and Google ranking is not well familiar with it.

Forst of all I want to correct you. Domain extension does not matter when it comes to SEO. back to your question, the new domain extension are cheap because they are still in promotional period. You can get dot science for just $5 for the period of 5 years. However, this domain extension will be priced higher once it becomes popular. There is one interesting thing about cheap domain extensions. You can get them for a small amount, however, when you are renewing you will have to pay a heavy price. I bought a dot online for 88 cents, however, I renewed for $32.

Oh, really? That's great news! So the .com monopoly is just due to people being more familiar with it rather than search engines favouring it because of how widespread it is? I'm a fan of new extensions, so I can't help but be cheered up by this.
Yeah, I've seen that renewal trick quite a few times, I always look out for that. However, plans like the 5$ for five years one is way too convenient to give up, and if the domains gets too expensive to renew once the time comes, you can just sell it for a nice profit margin, right?

They are practically new domains and they might pick up in time. These domains gives the first impression that they are intended for scientific websites therefore limited audience. It might come in handy in a few years if you feel like saving one.

I am also not a fan of long extensions as these can be very confusing. Why is some domain extensions cheap? Because they're promotional which means low usage and not that popular. So less popular for a less price so expect a low output too but I believe once the domain extension because popular and established that is when you get a much higher price for it.

Hi! I don't really undersand the question quite clearly. Because i tried searching and .science is $34.99 while .space is $2.99. but he cheapest I saw was $0.99 and I also found free ones. Even though you have a $0.99 domain but if the name is awesome that domain can make you rich if somebody wants to buy it from you. The domain name prized $0.99 is already a .com also. If maybe you can ellaborate your question we may be able to help you out more properly.

I'm new on this forum and I was surprised to see this subject, regarding .space and .science extensions. First off, being an kind of old school, I haven't gotten used to seeing more than three (3) letters after the dot. It doesn't seem um, er, normal to be to see .space etc. I've gotten so used to .com, .net, .org, .gov and the like. Someone on thread had mentioned that they were cheap and also are on a promotional lets say, "level". This actually worries me. Not to change subject here, you see, I am also an investor of Cryptocurrency (Bitcons, etc.) -- and one of the last investment platforms, that was new, had a .space extension. I was thinking, how odd and unusual the extension was. Needless to say, now that I know the .space and other extensions are "cheaper" and "experimental" - I am no concerned about the authenticity of this new investment website. In the alt coin investment business, we're used to having sites go in and out. That's the nature of the game. But most of those long lasting sites had regular, 3 letter extensions. This was my first investment in a .space extension. What to think. I'll observe it for about a week. I've only be on it for about 3 days and doing ok. Good to find this forum with this subject. Wish me luck!

You are basically paying for the familiarity factor with TLDs such as .com and .net. Consider this - if you tell your grandmother who is only vaguely familiar with the Internet that you've setup a new website and the domain is myexperiments.science, is she likely to remember it? Probably not and her browser will be suggesting myexperiments.com.

It depends on the registrar they can go the expensive route and sell not many or go cheapish and sell many.
