I keep hearing about companies like Cloudflare and all the services they offer to protect your website from attacks, DDoSs, data theft and so on and so forth.
Still, there's a question that has been floating in my mind for quite some time by now: do all websites really need such security solutions?

If your websites has no data to steal or accounts to break in, what's the point of paying (or simply slowing down, even if you're using a free service) for additional security measures that are protecting you from nonexistent threats (or, at the very least, threats that can't really harm you)? Or do people act on a "prevention is better than the cure" basis?

Everything that's online need security, even if you don't have any data to steal, hackers won't know if you have any data till they hack you, and they don't necessarily hack you for your data, they even hack for spamming, using your web server to attack others etc...

Moreover some hacker just hack because they can.

It's always better to be safe then sorry

Good point. So web servers can be used for attacks as well? I thought only computers could be used to lead attacks, but to think that taking over a website can give the hackers the power to manage the whole server is mind-blowing. Thanks for the heads up!

You will definitely need security for your website whether you have data to protect or not, it's a must. Hackers are working very hard daily looking for loopholes in different websites. If you don't use any security measure to protect your site you will just wake up one day and find out that your website has been hijacked from you.
And once your website is affected, it will also affect the gadgets people are using to access your site and you will lose your reputation in the sight of your audience immediately.
There was even a day I access a particular website and my system was affected with a bad infection called "Money Vking". It affects all my system overall performance and took me good 9months buying different products to get rid of this infection off my system. Also, my friend lost his PayPal $2k because of the website he downloaded from which gained access to his information.
Since that time I knew the importance of security, everything I'm using now both online & offline is protected.
The security measure is not only for your website, even your gadgets need protection.
I've experienced the bad side of not being well protected before and I can tell you it's not a joke, so don't fall a victim.

It is a shame these days that there are so many people trying to hack your servers and use your accounts for spamming etc. Security is the only way to ensure that you won't have that problem. Hacking can ruin your reputation, relationships with clients, endanger your subscribers' emails, and much more. It is not simply a matter of ruining you but everyone connected with you as well.

Extremely good points, I see why security is so important. Even if there's no sensible data or possible exploit to make use of, you might add one in the future, and you'll need to be secure by then by denying all possible entrances from the get-go.
Those are both infuriating occurrences, I'm sorry for what happened there. It's not just about reputation, it's about not harming other people here, which is the #1 rule for common living as a whole.

Again, great point here, too. Since websites are all about interaction, the one you'll be damaging this way first and foremost is your userbase.

If the hosting provider is providing the security then it's not needed to have the special security on the server. You jut need to take care that you should always the update the applications. You should scan the uploaded contents regularly. You should always patch the scripts. Set the correct ownership and permission for your files and directories.

This is what all needed.

Hi, security is important in all aspects.

"Hacking" IPs/domains is usually done by bots and its done really quickly, so even sites with no important data, would be automatically tried to be hacked.

Once hacked, they could inject shit in and force backlinks in the future/send spam out on your server etc..

so its always important to secure your server & website

Also, Please UPDATE your wordpress installation, even an empty WP installation can cause a huge headache for you if its hacked

When I think of website security, I'm more concerned about what somebody could publish in my name more than steeling the content itself, but I wouldn't trust any company with my website security.

Hello. I believe web sessions must be secured whether or not you feel there is something to hide or keep secure. I know you still lock your house if there is nothing in it worth taking. Anybody could go either way, but of course it is recommended to.

If you care for your site, you must protect it. Security measures are done for your safety also. You are somewhat connected to your site, then whatever happens in it, you are responsible and liable. There are many cases of online crimes that are happening now, it's not good to come in this online world without any protection.

If your website doesn't contains some private information of yours or the visitors on the website, then there is really no need to pay and have extra security on your website. Hackers will not try to hack your website, as they mostly attack such websites with more private and confidential information.
But, if your website gets DOS or DDOS attacks then there is a rare chance of crashing of the site. If you are using a free website making service, then you don't need to worry anything, as the service providers have already set all the security systems on their site. For example, www.wix.com which allows you to create a free website, I am also having one of my family clothing business, and still no uses. I also tried DOS attack by requesting my white hat hacker friend, but still website worked fine.

I agree with you, but I think security is important for everything nowadays because there are many hackers in all ages. To keep all your information under your control you have to care about the security of the PC, websites and programs. Actually, security is everybody's concern.

Security is very much important to websites most important to e-commerce websites, government websites, online banking websites as everyone is susceptible to credit card fraud and identity theft. Having security measures on every website will add protection to the user and most important is that it deflects intrusion by hackers.

The complexity of the security solution that you need for your website is based on what is the purpose of the website. There is no real point in arming a simple static website with some less important contents or a personal blog with loads of security [ of course you can do if you have enough money to spend :D ]. But if you are dealing with critical data, run a web store, take booking , etc yes you should secure your data and put security measure both at server level and application level. Again, the area you want to secure still differs..whether its your traffic, data, etc. So its up to the web master to decide the optimal security suite for their website / server based on the nature of their websites.

Definitely all websites should be very mindful about security. In this era of great minds, stealing information through web is very easy for some. I'm pretty sure none of us would want to compromise this. So we need to make sure that we offer the best security measures for all users. Nothing beats peace of mind if you know that your information are secured.

Every website should and must have security measures, that's a no brainier in my opinion. Prevention is really better than cure, now a days there's a lot of hackers out there that hacks your site not just because you have such files, data's or whatsoever that they can use. They hack simply because they can and there's a lot of things to do like using your personal info's to attack others and will probably give some bad publicity on your site and on your personality. In short, it's nice to have security for our peace of mind.

Nowadays, people are security conscious. Prevention is better than cure. You owe it to the public or users to secure your website against hackers or bad elements. Once your server or site got hit, you are not only affected but also those connected or using your site. Sensitive or critical data may be used or misused and you will be held liable for not being responsible enough to provide proper protection and may ruin your integrity. Better be careful rather worry and suffer the negative consequences.

It's advisable for all websites to be as secure as possible. If it comes to a website like online store or another that accepts payments or collects users' personal data, then it should be secured in every way possible. But, even if it comes to a news website or a blog, it's again better if the user sees it marked as ‘'secured''. Taking into consideration that a person can get a web hosting plan with included SSL certificates at very affordable price (for about $2 or 5 dollars per month), there's no reason why not benefit from these security features. If a user sees that a website has implemented some security measures, this will make the site look more trustworthy, but not a scam.
