Convenient to pay for multi-year plan?

Most hosting plans offer discounted prices for multi-year plans (e.g. 20% off with a two-year plan compared to the one-year one), provided you pay it all at once.
Is it truly convenient? Wouldn't it be risky if you're new to the company and eventually decide to switch to another one? Or what if the company's services get worse after a year?

A person can always look at legit reviews and decide if they want to risk a long term venture with a company - because if things go bad, the money isn't going to be returned. Anyway, assuming the company is good, a long term payment takes a load off your back. You simply don't have to worry about paying another bill. Also, as was stated by the OP, you might be able to get massive discounts.

For how long have you been using their services? If it is a few months, and you have the impression that the company is a reliable one, then you may benefit from these discounts. But, despite the lucrative discounts and the convenience to pay all at once, the truth is that you can never know whether everything will be always fine with the host's services.

Depends on the host, generally multi year plans are good deal for both costumer as well as company, of course you have to have reliable host to get this plan. It's always better to know what you're getting into so if you plan on buy hosting like this test for few months do some research ask people who've bought more then 1 year hosting from them and then do it. As for risk none knows what's going to happen tomorrow and I don't think any company would plan on their services getting worse.

Thanks to everyone for the answer! It seems it all boils down to how reliable the company is in both your experience and others'. However, most best offers are proposed by minor companies with relatively little experience in the market, since their aim is to start building up a steady userbase; either that or their servers are located in unfavorable places, compared to the average geographical distribution of visitors (OVH is European, for instance, and it has very convenient plans). Would you take the risk, if this could make you save tens (or hundreds) of bucks?

a simple whois on the domain shows that these type of offerts are mostly done by new comers eager to get clients to pay for servers costs.
I have checked some offerts posted on this website, from "companys" with domains registered like 2 months ago. I guess that says a lot.

For me, I will not go for multi-year plans especially when I am a new customer. I still have to observe the legitimacy and reliability of the company. In the view of my business, I still have to observe if is it gaining or not. It is so wasteful and a regret to pay the multi-year plan when my company is not earning and later on closed. So, both sides, should be considered.

If you are satisfied with your support provider's service then feel free to sing-up for the multi-year plan. There are benefits of it as if your hosting provider will upgrade the prices, it will not affect you as you have already paid for the multi-year plan.

If the hosting provider will face some and will shut-down his hosting service then if he is really caring about the customers then he will inform you and will move your hosting service to another provider without any cost with the same hosting service plan.

So it's totally depend on, how your hosting provider is.

Pay for multiple years?

Hmmm, not the best idea if you are dealing with a company that's new to you. Don't judge a company by its web content. People pay good money to get good content put on their websites. That doesn't prove that their service is anything like what their website say.

However, for a company which you have used for years and found to be reliable, it could be an option. Like, for example, I have used Namecheap for years. It hasn't failed me yet. Still, it would take some kind of real incentive for me to pay for many years in advance. If it's just a ten percent discount, I would still probably pay year by year.
