When to upgrade to cloud hosting?

I've had a look around in this subforum, and it sounds like cloud hosting offers better performance thanks to its scalability. This power can be used for resource-intensive projects, like web applications, or to sustain bigger loads of traffic with more reliability than dedicated physical servers. Obviously, though, this costs money.
So, when do you think one should upgrade to cloud hosting from either shared or dedicated server hosting in terms of bandwidth and daily visits?

Cloud hosting is not an upgrade from a dedicated server. It's only a way to have scalability and high-availability without having to purchase several dedicated server.
But you will have less performance for the same price on a cloud server than on a dedicated server, the only difference is there are no high-availability with a single dedicated server.

It's less expensive to use dedicated servers and it provide better performance and resources, but have you the budget to purchase 2-3 dedicated servers and use them as a multi-node cluster ?

I must have misunderstood how cloud hosting works. If it's not an upgrade (as in, you can't go from dedicated server hosting to cloud hosting), then is it a sort of "service" you add to your plan? Is it just another way to manage your website's data on your hosting provider's behalf?
If I got it right, the only occurence in which you'd pick a cloud hosting plan over a standard one is when the latter wouldn't be enough to manage your bandwidth by its own, correct? It's like picking a single-core 3 GHz one over a multi-core 1.5GHz processor. It offers better performance and it's cheaper, but you won't be able to get any further with it once you hit the maximum resource ceiling. Or does it work differently?

Think of Cloud Hosting just as a different method for hosting, for example, let's take an example with Dropbox. You can have a thousand photos on your hard drive and be safe that anyone there has access to it, you can easily change what's in there and access immediatly, this would be the regular dedicated server hosting. Instead let's say you have these 1000 photos on your Dropbox, which in this example would represent the cloud hosting, you have a wider access but it's a bit slower for you to update it.

Personally, I think Cloud Hosting hasn't come to it's full hability, so I would recommend sticking to dedicated physical servers, the prices are most of them the same, and as you just said, Cloud Hosting is recommended whenever a dedicated server as its own isn't enough to manage your bandwidth, since Cloud Servers are easier and faster to increase in capability.

Cheers!

I have never used cloud hosting, however, I believe you have to upgrade your hosting to cloud hosting if you are dealing with sensitive data and your website gets very large trafic. Cloud hosting is referred as the most secured hosting.

Based on what??

Cloud hosting is no more secure then any other shared hosting. After all, it is still shared web hosting. The difference between traditional shared and cloud is that cloud runs on multiple servers, whereas traditional hosting is on a single server. This adds hardware redundancy, but not security.

I think that cleared up some confusion about it, thank you! I was under the assumption cloud hosting was pricier than dedicated server, or does the price only scale as you start to stack up new resources?
Plus, dedicated server are already extremely powerful on their own. I don't think any normal user will need to use it for their website. Especially if you're trading resources with accessibility (which sounds like a fair compromise, though: after all, there's a high chance websites with such large databases will have several people working on it).

Oh, is that so? I'm not privy of any technical details, is it because of how delocalized it is? Because that sounds like a major upside compared to other hosting plans.

If you're using dedicated servers then don't go for cloud hosting. Yes cloud servers can be configured to match those on a dedicated servers so the point is why change it the first place? also cloud servers can be more complex so stay with your dedicated server and don't "upgrade" to cloud hosting :rolleyes2:
