Lightbulb Should I hire web designers or make them part of my team?

I'm making a new website along with a friend of mine and one of the most important questions we have right now is if either we should hire someone to do the design of our webpage (templates, logo, banners, and all that) for an unique payment, or maybe look for someone that's interested in the long run in our project and would be available for us at any time we want, sharing a % of the web earnings.

At the short run, if the project's really succesful, it's cheaper just hiring someone to do everything and leave us with what we need, but in case we would change our mind about some design or need to constantly update some of the stuff, maybe it's less work for us to make someone part of our team indefinitely. What do you recommend? Thanks!

What kind of website are you making ? If it's some website that require regular updates then you may share profits but if you are talking about web hosting business, what will a web designer do in long run in web hosting business ?

Yes, you should definitely do it. Seeing your future prospects, it's better to let the designers handle your websites while you can work on other assignments. You can always drop your suggestions to them from time to time so there's no loss to be precise. The time you'll get from doing this can be used for other important projects, for example when discussing minor tweaks and all that. You could always hire the professionals using freelance websites or if you're looking for full time designers then you could directly hire them (most preferred).

It's a economy related website that also has some business in the web hosting, it's kind of a combination of both and my main reasons of why it would need to have a long-term designer is because almost everyday the banners would need to be updated with new prices (for example BTC) and that kind of stuff, of course the designer could leave us the templates and we could update them ourselves.

Thank you for your recommendation, is the option I'm probably heading to, since I found a good friend who could do the job and be part of the team.

Yes, it is better to have someone you trust so you can make any changes where necessary. You do not want to rely on freelancers for after-sales service anyway.

It really depends on your needs. If you have regular task with your business website or client's website, you will need at least one designer in your team. And if you are selling just hosting, not website design/development and don't need regular changes in your own site, you can outsource or hire someone.

Hiring a freelancer first is a better idea, we're looking for skilled people here. If you found the qualified people based on their skills and experiences, then put them in.

Please note that there are also pros and cons on hiring freelancer.Pros would be, their cost- they may cost so much when it comes to hourly rate, but you can save annually when you factor in not having to pay for their benefits like health insurance and retirement, as well as medicare and social security. There are so many skilled freelancers out there, so choosing won't be hard thing to do. Cons would be, their availability- freelancers won't always be there for you because they maybe on vacation, or they're busy with something else, or they just don't like you at all.

If you found the right freelancer and putting them in your own team will be the only thing to be difficult, but there are lots of freelancers who are looking for a team.

There is no need to hire a designer on permanent basis of offering them share in the business. It simply does make sense. You can always hire a designer when ever you have a need for a new design, logo or banner. For startups this just doesn't suite. Or else if you grow in near future and have to market on daily basis like for example on FB you have to post something along with some attractive design, wallpaper or info graphics. Only then hiring a designer is a suitable idea but for small startups..no way.

If your website is needing continuous updates then you should hire the web designer. You can hire him on work basis. It will be beneficial for you when you need the modification on your website when you want.

If you do not require to perform any updates after developing the site then no need to hire the web designer. Just make sure to take backup from the designer after complete development.

As for me, make them as part of your team, because it's nice to have a Team whatever happen they are always their by your side, unlike if your hire your people but they work for your day or they work for 8Hours a day then leave in your company. If your make them as part of your Team, any time you can contact them if there is some problems happen in your web design. That's my opinion.

I guess it depends on your budget in all honesty. I would say hire someone to make the initial design of the website then if you aren't the busiest person in the word, learn HTML, Javascript, and PHP on your own should your website need maintenance since it isn't really that hard or time consuming to learn. If you don't have time for that you should still probably hire outside help since having someone on a payroll and letting them have a profit of the web earnings is a bit much, in my opinion. You should probably just thoroughly scope out what the scope of your website will be and have a completed clear picture of it before you hire the outside help so there isn't any second guessing after the fact.
