Should I hire web designers or make them part of my team?
I'm making a new website along with a friend of mine and one of the most important questions we have right now is if either we should hire someone to do the design of our webpage (templates, logo, banners, and all that) for an unique payment, or maybe look for someone that's interested in the long run in our project and would be available for us at any time we want, sharing a % of the web earnings.
At the short run, if the project's really succesful, it's cheaper just hiring someone to do everything and leave us with what we need, but in case we would change our mind about some design or need to constantly update some of the stuff, maybe it's less work for us to make someone part of our team indefinitely. What do you recommend? Thanks!

Yes, you should definitely do it. Seeing your future prospects, it's better to let the designers handle your websites while you can work on other assignments. You can always drop your suggestions to them from time to time so there's no loss to be precise. The time you'll get from doing this can be used for other important projects, for example when discussing minor tweaks and all that. You could always hire the professionals using freelance websites or if you're looking for full time designers then you could directly hire them (most preferred).

It really depends on your needs. If you have regular task with your business website or client's website, you will need at least one designer in your team. And if you are selling just hosting, not website design/development and don't need regular changes in your own site, you can outsource or hire someone.

Hiring a freelancer first is a better idea, we're looking for skilled people here. If you found the qualified people based on their skills and experiences, then put them in.
Please note that there are also pros and cons on hiring freelancer.Pros would be, their cost- they may cost so much when it comes to hourly rate, but you can save annually when you factor in not having to pay for their benefits like health insurance and retirement, as well as medicare and social security. There are so many skilled freelancers out there, so choosing won't be hard thing to do. Cons would be, their availability- freelancers won't always be there for you because they maybe on vacation, or they're busy with something else, or they just don't like you at all.
If you found the right freelancer and putting them in your own team will be the only thing to be difficult, but there are lots of freelancers who are looking for a team.

There is no need to hire a designer on permanent basis of offering them share in the business. It simply does make sense. You can always hire a designer when ever you have a need for a new design, logo or banner. For startups this just doesn't suite. Or else if you grow in near future and have to market on daily basis like for example on FB you have to post something along with some attractive design, wallpaper or info graphics. Only then hiring a designer is a suitable idea but for small startups..no way.

If your website is needing continuous updates then you should hire the web designer. You can hire him on work basis. It will be beneficial for you when you need the modification on your website when you want.
If you do not require to perform any updates after developing the site then no need to hire the web designer. Just make sure to take backup from the designer after complete development.

As for me, make them as part of your team, because it's nice to have a Team whatever happen they are always their by your side, unlike if your hire your people but they work for your day or they work for 8Hours a day then leave in your company. If your make them as part of your Team, any time you can contact them if there is some problems happen in your web design. That's my opinion.

As per my experience if you have continues updated on your site and also you have some more work then you required a skill person who is be your team part for your work or if you have a single websites then hire a person.

Both choices sound really great. I do think that hiring someone to do the work for you would be easier and would relieve some pressure or stress if any. You'll probably save money as well. I'd say get a professional to hook you up and then you guys will take it from there.

In my opinion, you can hire someone and start as a "project based" employment type of work first, if you will be satisfied with the project, you can hire them with full time if you really need web designers in your company especially if you have tons of work, of course you need a full timer that can help with your business.

I suggest that you make your web designer a part of your team. I believe that it is going to be much cheaper rather than hiring one. It can definitely work in your advantage since anytime that you would want to change or update something in your website it is going to be easy access for you.
One more thing is if you make that person a part of your team that person will be empowered and will definitely create or think of other things that will make your website looks good and interesting.

For me, you should make him/her part of your team. Exchanging ideas is the advantage if you put him/her in your team, because if you hire a web designer in the first place most of W.D what you say is final! That's it, no more suggestions to make it more appealing or great. And you need a beta webpage so much better if someone in your team creates it.

If you have regular projects and they are quite large in size then it will require web designers to work full hours allocated in their role, while pay-per-project designers tend to charge higher fee as they have gap between projects. Also they will require to communicate often with you for getting feel of the project while designers in team already has some details of projects with them as they get it from previous projects they have worked for you. Its better to make web designers part of team if you have regular projects for longer duration of time.

I actually run into the same problem, but I ended up hiring a freelancer. My website continually needs an update, but then I can always hire another freelancer to do the job. I know this thread was created a long time ago, so what was your solution?

It depends on what website you are creating. Especially if it is a profitable site you should be aware of who will only know your site's background. But for me you should hire them as your team or the one who will be with you always. Pick someone you will rely on and be trusted. From time to time he will be the one responsible for checking the site so he should be in your team.

I think if it is in your budget when beginning the company to handle the banners, logos, website, and such then do so. You a having help with this gives you other time to be able to do things to promote your business in other ways. Then again if you want to save money and be able to put your own personalize all of your business stuff then do it yourself. If you re not skilled at it then it is a learning experience you can slowly or quickly gain knowledge gaining another skill.

Yes you should hire someone who is an expert to do that, less hassle to you. And if the budget can cover all the expenses, then you can have someone to help. I believe in the saying, the more the better.

I agree that you need to hire a web designer to help you out with the website design, etc. This way you can focus more on the other things rather than spending your time thinking what design will fit in to your business. But hiring a web designer also has a risk on it. I had many customers who were not able to get in touch with their web dev or had a misunderstanding and it even comes to a point that they need to sue them.Alps Host
