Hi, I'm Cesar from Venezuela. I would like to build my own file server where I can store all of my photos, movies and music, and I don't know where to start. I've been doing some research, and I found some options like FreeNAS, which seemed to me to be like aimed mostly to an enterprise environment. I read too about Windows Media Server, but it seemed to me like outdated. I want something that is easy to install and configure.

The main goal is to be able to access all of my media files stored on that server from the other computers and laptop in my home network, and of my course, smartphones too.

It would be a plus if I can access it from the web too, so I can share files with my parents when I visit them.

I'm all ears to your suggestions, and thank you in advance.

Hello Cesar,
at the moment, the best solution available for your needs is NextCloud.
You can host your own dropbox/google drive/onedrive, and sync your files from your computers and mobile phones with the client available.
You have just to setup a server with a LAMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) or LEMP ( Nginx, MySQL, PHP) to install nextcloud.

Ok, I'll try it with ubuntu server as I think the performance is better than a Windows Server. Thank you for the reply. I'm going to try it first on Virtualbox just to test it and see if it has all I expect.

My internet connection is very slow, that's why I prefer to have the data locally, and only in some cases I will access it rom the Internet.
