I'm planning on starting a social media website and I don't know which server is best to start with.
Should I start with a dedicated server or I should go for another server like the VPS, if yes what's the advantage of a dedicated server on a new social media? And can anybody please tell me what server did big social media today like facebook, twitter started with?
Thanks.

Gettingmile,

I am curious as to what your new social media site will offer that others do not? This is an intriguing idea. I would be intimidated in doing this because of the competition, so my hat is off to you, and I wish you the best of success and luck in this endeavor.

I agree with this statement. I hope your social media site has differentiating points from the current big boys in the industry. The competition is stiff but it's not impossible. I am curious to see how you market your site.

As for the hosting package, it depends on what resources which you require. What sort of medium does your social media use ? If you are still at early stages of initiating the site, I think it's best to used shared hosting. At the end of the day, budget planning is important so do proper allocation on important stuff.

I guess it is a new site hence you can start with a shared hosting package at this time.
Check it out some good plans here https://forumweb.hosting/102-shared-hosting-offers
Unless you are using a platform that needing to have more resource to run it then you can start with a VPS, if not you only need a shared hosting and it is enough for your site because your site will have less traffic when just started and you don't need a dedicated server for it.

Dedicated server are always better but VPS is also a great choice if your site doesn't have too much traffic.
As said, your site is new and you should go with a shared hosting first, if you see it needs to upgrade to a better hosting plan like VPS or dedicated server, then it is time to go with one.

And can anybody please tell me what server did big social media today like facebook, twitter started with?
I think they are using big data centers to store and running their social sites.
With a mount of traffic coming to Facebook or Twitter daily I could not imagine what type of server they are needing to run them.

If its a new social media site and doesn't yet have a huge amount of daily views and depending on your budget I would suggest a scalable SSD VPS which will offer all of the benefits of a dedicated server at a lower price. However once your project grows it would be advisable to upgrade to a cloud server instead of a dedicated.

Hello @Joemilford
In the entrepreneurial world today, ideas are very important. In fact, in the social media platforms, good ideas is what sells most.
WhatsApp developer sells his idea of providing "Instant messaging".
SnapChat is "Instant pictures, videos messaging" known as snaps.
Twitter creates a "following and unfollowing platform".
The same thing goes here as well, creating a competitive idea that sells.
Thanks for the good luck wishes:thankyou:

The ultimate there is the Cloud server and I will look into it in the future. By the way, do you know much about Google cloud, does it worth it?

For now you are better off with a scalable VPS, regarding Googles cloud that might not be the solution you are looking for. I would suggest to look for private cloud services for such a project. While public clouds are a good option they are not suitable in this situation, social media websites require as much flexibility as possible.
