Content Discovery and Sharing sites are sites that allow you to share links from websites (it may either be a link from your website or from another person's website) and in turn discover links shared by others. I personally use these types of sites, specifically Stumbleupon and Pinterest in order to boost the traffic of my websites.

In order to gain a lot of traffic from these content discovery sites, you must:
  • be active,
  • share content from others and not merely your own or else you might be flagged as a spammer,
  • and gain a lot of followers

If you do these, you most certainly will have lots of views once you post something.

But even if these sites increase my web traffic, do they have an effect on SEO? Do they improve search engine rankings? Or are the effects merely temporary?

It is possible to have traffic from Stumbleupon and Pinterest but not much, can you track track traffic came from these social bookmarketing sites?
I tried them but I don't see they are better than Twitter or Facebook.

I am just curious what way have you used to gain followers for your profile on Stumbleupon and Pinterest?

No, it will not help you to improve SEO for your site, even it is not better than social networks as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin because those sites are only giving you some traffic if you have a big amount of followers.

For me, Stumbleupon is generating more traffic than Facebook or Twitter (for now). There are times that I generate 20k views for a single article in one day using Stumbleupon. HOWEVER, the article should be interesting so that it would be shared and liked by a lot. Not every article shared in content discovery sites get a lot of views.

And yep, it's easy to track where the traffic comes from especially if you're using WordPress. Just activate site stats from your Jetpack plugin.

To get followers, I just follow each and everyone that I feel is active. Usually, they follow me back. I'm not sure if that's just plain luck.

Hmm, it's just too bad that it won't have an effect on SEO.

How social shares affect SEO is almost impossible to understand. According to Google, shares on social media are basically just treated like more backlinks, and there is no additional, direct benefit at the present that comes from content being shared on Twitter or Facebook. While it's true that a social media audience is an invaluable asset for nurturing a community of brand advocates, that manifests other benefits in the way of long-term drip marketing, word of mouth sales, and backlinks from your content, all evidence indicates that Google is not currently looking at this information.
