Yes Joomla was the past and now is Wordpress.
Honestly I used Joomla about 10 years ago but it is very solid and not easy to customize what I need for a blog or website.
While Worpress is having more free & good plugins and themes and easy to do what we need.
Joomla has low security and loading very slow hence bloggers went with Wordpress, I think it is an essential thing.

It was very popular in the past but it is not easy for users who don't know about coding or configurations.
They (Joomla) also focus on building their system but forgot that users need a light cms with easy plugins/themes to integrate into it.

There are many reasons. Two of the most annoying ones are; Most of Joomla extensions are paid, while we can get a lot of useful plugins with better functionalities from Wordpress without paying a penny. Another one is, there are so many bugs on Joomla. One of which that makes people move to Wordpress is when it was really troubling when upgrading from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.0. At that time, there are many site owners got their Joomla sites crashed. What a disaster it was to me, as I lost a lot of traffic for a month. Fortunately, I have backed up my content, and then I moved them to my Wordpress site.

I've seen many Joomla projects that have switched over to WordPress over the last few years. WordPress now has been vastly improved over what it used to be years ago. Plus with PHP7 being out, a lot of codes have been cleaned up.
