I have seen websites that registered a domain and nobody has similar extensions. Was it trademarked? Should i just register similar extensions with my domain name? or are there other ways to achieve that?

You can have same domain names but with different extensions.
You will not violate their copyright if you don't sell or using their products on your websites.

If you have enough money to maintain all extensions for your domain name then you can go with it.

Its always good to own as many of the popular extensions as you can for your domain. This not only stops your competition from creating a similar site, but more importantly stops some average joe from getting one of the other extensions and starting a completely different type of business, which might confuse potential clients.

For example. We own the majority of the madRooster TLDs. But there is a very popular restaurant that uses madroostercafe.com in Milwaukee, WI is often confused with us. We get inquiries quite often through the website and social media about how they thought we were a restaurant. But as our official business name is madRooster.com we have also trademarked the name as well as the capitalization of madRooster, so that no other madrooster company can display the name like that.
