Did you install a hosting control panel for yourself or it comes installed on the server you bought, what control panel do you guys here using for your hosting servers? why do you like it?
If possible, I would like to know which control panels are a waste of resources and hard to use?
I use both cPanel and Plesk on the servers I currently use. I am being offered by a hosting provider to try Directadmin but I have no experience with this panel.
So how about you guys? Please share feedback of your control panels too. Your comments would be appreciated.

Personally, I prefer to setup myself a control panel on a fresh linux install, at first to use the latest release and not an outdated template, and also to customize the configuration.
My personal vps is running with Plesk Onyx 18.2 setup on debian 8 Jessie.
Why Plesk ?
- WordPress toolkit to manage/secure all wordpress instance easily
- Performance : Apache + Nginx + php5.6 to 7.1 + MariaDB
- security : fail2ban, firewall and letsencrypt SSL certificates
- stability and easy migration with the extension plesk migrator (if you want to choose another provider, you can migrate all your websites/emails in few minutes on another plesk server)

cPanel is my second choice, but less intuitive than plesk in my opinion, and more intended to provide shared hosting service.
I haven't try directadmin recently, but lot of users said it's the cheapest control panel. Not sure that mean it's the best one.

plesk and debian 8 are fantastic together!

Easy to use for client and i found more complete then cpanel

Direct admin is good but not userfriendly, has a very old interface

For free panels, i prefer VestaCP as it's lightweight and written in Bash and has all the required features to get a website up and running.

PHP
Apache over Nginx Proxy or Nginx + PHP FPM
Email
Databases
DNS

Over free panels, cPanel works great for PHP hosted sites IMO
