Blogging and owning websites is the trend these days. Most people or companies create websites to market and sell their products and services.

It is not every blogger, website owner or forum owner that knows the importance of hosting.
Some people choose free hosting provided by some platforms like blogger, wapka and WordPress, due to financial constraints, some choose free hosting due to ignorance and others, due to negligence.

Some premium hosting companies offer services like unlimited bandwidth and little or no server downtime while most free hosting companies will allocate bandwith to you. Their server could go down anytime and the could be bad for your business.

There are lots of affordable hosting plans online. I choose paid hosting. What do you choose? Free hosting or Paid hosting?

Free hosting is normally trash, a quality supported hosting plan is only around $5 a month which is still more or less free.

I would have some moral qualms about selling something absolutely terrible. In fact, I think most people would. In that case, I don't think free hosting is totally bad. In fact, the only trade-offs are lower resources or the presence of ads. Anyway, for a website starting out, normally such things would'nt be a big concern. However, though, someone wanting more power or simply an ad-free site, the addition of a premium plan would be the best choice.

You and I would have Ethical and moral concerns yes. But this is business and some people don't care about such things. They just care about getting as much money as possible and leave the morals at the door.

I will not choose free hosting but I would choose free blog as bloggers or wordpress to start a few sites to help my main site.
More people used free blog platforms and stared developing from there and they succeeded. For me, it is difficult to edit things on free blogs and some free hosting often inserted ads into your site if you use their services.

Some premium hosting companies offer services like unlimited bandwidth and little or no server downtime while most free hosting companies will allocate bandwidth to you. Their server could go down anytime and the could be bad for your business.

I chose paid hosting because I can control everything from my website to hosting configurations. Never go with free hosting unless you want to use it as a test.
The final sentence is you will get what you pay for.

If it's a hobby project can take also free, if it's professional/for production then paid, and more importantly a good, reputable one.

I will second the trabia. You can always start from free hosting as downtime with any host are now a difficult thing keeping in view the latest technology in place. Its just that your resources will be limited. So simply checkout any free host and when your requirement for better resources arise shift to a premium host or purchase additional resources from the same host your having the hosting from (at least they deserve it and there is no other purpose they are letting you use their free services.)

Please be shared to all you guys some pros & cons about Free hosting and Paid hosting as below:

1. FREE HOSTING

Pros
Free of Charge
Using with small demands or personal website and blog
Cons
You must to use a long sub domain name with hosting provider name (such as: yourname.hosting.com)
Using with very slow traffic and resources, especially RAM & CPU usage limitation
Using with small ads on your website from hosting providers
Some restrictions on files, scripts, software,…and many more others
Using with lack security and maybe without database install on it
Using with no technical support

2. PAID HOSTING

Pros
Most common use by wide variety requirements, from personal to small or medium businesses
Almost shared hosting plans are cheap but there are some specific plans with additional fee
Almost shared hosting plans come with free domain name
Always have technical support via ticket, email or forum
Easy to upgrade to higher plans when needed
Cons
Because they use a single server to share between many clients, so there are some security risks introduced
Because using sharing resources, so if your websites have a huge traffic or using much CPU resources, you need to upgrade to the higher plans
If one site getting harmful for the server, others may be affected due to using shared single server.
You're maybe restricted in using some programming language and file type supported (it's based on each hosting provider)

I hope this helps.

I don't think it's the norm to use a subdomain with free hosting. Normally, these companies give people the option of using their own domain. Nonetheless, though, you still have the possible pitfalls with free hosting including one or more of the following: ads, limited resources, and limited security as the poster above mentioned.

Anyway, in my opinion, I think free hosting can work sometimes, but other times no. For instance, looking at free forum boards like ZetaBoards, they're cool and all, but sometimes you simply don't have the power you'd have if you could just host a forum on your own hosting, which ironically, could also be free.

I would say that if you don't have 5€ to pay for a basic hosting plan, then you are not serious about your business and in what you are doing.
Remember that in many cases you will have the clients payment details, data, addresses, emails, passwords etc.. all this sensitive informations in a free hosting that can be hacked, or offline for days, months or forever. And the client that use this shops/websites are not aware that his informations can be easily stoled. So there's a big responsibility for someone that use this free hosting.

When I was ready to launch my first website, I knew there were many free hosting services, however, I never checked out these services, instead I did a little research and found a hosting company that offered a package to suit my budget.
If you are a novice and want to learn how a website works, you may try free hosting, however, once you master the skills of webmaster, you need to upgrade to paid hosting. Free hosting give you little bandwith and diskspace. Uptime is also unrealiable.

Its better to use free hosting only for testing purpose. Now a days you will get a shared hosting package with advanced feature at an average price of $3 per month.

Well, to be honest, hosting isn't that much these days. For instance, there are several 50 cents and 1 dollar a month packages on webmaster forums. Also, I've seen at least one non-reseller company that offering it for 1 to 2 dollars a month. In that case, why should someone risk free hosting? Well, one reason is that it might be the same or better than the 50 cents and 1 dollar companies, but probably not the other ones I mentioned.

That's true. When you can get hosting package with as little $1 a month (some hosts offer much lower than $1), why should you bother with free hosting. Apart from being free, there are no other good things about free hosting. There is no gurantee of uptime, you get small bandwith and diskspace and support is virtually absent.

I used to be part of Xisto hosting. They were free host for me for around 10 years or so. I remember being part of their service since 2004 or so. Customer support was extremely slow. And the amount of time it takes to get ticket solved was slow. That's the cost you pay for free hosting. You can't demand anything. Also you have very limited control over your stuff. They can abandon the service any time. You really have no control over that part. That's another reason why I don't recommend being part of free hosting.

Some people use free hosting and they say it's good, but I think it's fine only if you do not intend to make your business grow. Along with advertising and everything else, these services have limited bandwidth and data transfer speed. If you want to host a website that is not that important to you and you don't focus on SEO, then maybe free hosting is not that bad option. But, I personally prefer paid hosting as it gives you more control over your website. After all, there are web hosting plans that cost even less than $2/mo, which is really cheap.

Difference between free hosting versus paid hosting is as follows:

Advertisements on your website are controlled by the web hosting company that provides you with the free web hosting.
Customer support is missing for free website hosting.
Low bandwidth and lesser data transfer capacity makes free website hosting vulnerable to greater downtime.

I think Blogspot and WordPress are not hosting. If it's said a web hosting, you can save your files to build a website. A web hosting has it's control panel.

So, free hosting Vs paid hosting? It depends, if you only want to have a blog or something similar just for fun, a hobby, then there is no need of a paid hosting service. On the other hand, if you're planing to start a bussiness or a new company, a serious endeavour, then you need a paid hosting service, it's that simple. For entertainment and down time purposes: free hosting. For companies and places that required it to generate income: paid hosting.

Free hosting is essentially spam. They make money on the information you give them and they collect, and the websites you run on their servers. When you can get your own private box for $5 these days from Linode or DO, its basically free.

If you are beginner then go with free hosting. But make sure, you will not host your main domain on it. As it's free of cost, it has so many limitations and security is provided. You will no get server access in free wen hosing. Limited resource, bandwidth used to stop the working of your website. There are chances of site hacking and content hacking from free website.

In paid hosting service, you can check the available hosting service plans and can select the suitable plan for your site. You will have required resources and bandwidth on the paid plan. Paid service will have proper security on the server. You will get the necessary access to server too Paid service will have backup facility too which will help you in situation where all site related data is lost.

So it's always recommend to have the paid hosting service.
