I haven't really heard much about it.

What is the purpose or more precisely why would I want to go for VPS?

Would like some in-depth examples if possible. I would like to start hosting some of my stuff soon, but it has been so long since the last time, I have completely forgotten how to do stuff and what to choose that would suit my needs the best.

VPS are just a way to split a dedicated server in several small servers. The main difference with a shared hosting, is the isolation (each vps is isolate from the other) and resources which are allocated and not shared with other users.

So, it provide the ability to do the same than with a dedicated server, but it's just smaller and less expensive. You can do anything you want with a vps. It's used for web hosting because it provide the ability to host several website in the same place, and it provide better performance in most of case.

Managed VPS are similar to shared hosting because you don't have to setup the server yourself and you will have a control panel like Plesk or cPanel to manage your website, and are more expensive.

Self-managed VPS are cheap and that doesn't mean slower than managed, but you will have to configure everything yourself and it will require to learn how linux work and how to host a website.

For starting a new project i recommend a simple, but reliable, web hosting account or if you have multiple projects a reseller account (all in shared environment).
When your project grow and require more resources, than you upgrade to a dedicated VPS (however is still shared).

My 2 cents ;)

VPS servers are configurable, providing a lot more flexibility. On shared hosts you can't really modify your environment because you'd be changing everyone else's as well. Since your account is contained within a virtual machine you can make a lot more changes without affecting others. This is something developers will be happy about. They are mainly used for large websites or websites with large amounts of traffis. If you are a beginner, i will highly recommend shared hosting

If you would like to run the over loaded applications or sites and you need more bandwidth, resources that time you should use the VPS. Also, if you've many customers and you're using reseller plan then it will be better if you'll move to the VPS plan because it's your own server which you can manage in your own ways.

You won't have any restrictions, if you've your own VPS. There are some conditions like, some of your clients have small websites while other will have high load websites that time, if you have VPS with us then you can manage the accounts for these customers according to their needs. You can assign the plans which you would like to provide.

VPS are managed and un-managed. Managed VPS are handled by your VPS service provider, you don't have to worry about the VPS setup and other things. If you will go with un-managed VPS then you will need to setup and handle them by your own.

I'd suggest, if you're beginner and would like to host only single site then you can go with shared hosting. Once you will get familiar then you can opt to VPS.

Hope this answer will help you.

The full meaning of VPS is "Visual Private Server" also known as Visual Dedicated Server(VDS) usually sold by a hosting provider.
It's just a normal server that is used in hosting a website but it's virtual and other servers are being hosted on the same Physical server. It appears as a dedicated server but several servers are making use of it, it's actually installed on a computer serving many websites. One single physical server can host many VPSs, each with its own operating system(OS) and runs the hosting for a particular user.
An example is owning a Condo, you still share things on the properties and you will be responsible for maintaining your property & repair anything inside of the condo. In a Virtual Private Server, you are given resources that are not shared by everyone on the same physical server.
There is also a hosting higher than VPS known as Dedicated Server, more costly and it's usually for bigger projects.
If you have a smaller project to execute, go for VPS.

Virtual private server is for sites needing an online presence 24/7. If your business requires an unbreakable, twenty four hours online, you need to set a private server for that. When I was trying some internet marketing stuff, I used Amazon aws free server for a year. I suggest you check it out @op. There are tutorials online that can guide to set it up.

When you outgrow shared hosting but don't need something as big and powerful as a dedicated server, a VPS is your answer. It bridges the gap between shared hosting and a full blown server.

There are several different reasons why, however in the web hosting industry the two most common are growth of business where resellers upgrade to a VPS service and some just require the flexibility of a VPS with root access.

A VPS is kinda like a cloud server. It's a split-up portion of a larger dedicated server that you can access and control remotely. People use VPS's for many uses like hosting websites, possibly gameservers, software workstations, applications that demand high CPU power.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) could be a virtual machine oversubscribed as a service by a web hosting service. A VPS runs its own copy of associate degree software (OS), and customers might have superuser-level access thereto software instance so that they will install nearly any software package that runs thereon OS.

There are countless ways in which you could use a VPS. It's essentially the same as a dedicated server, only in a virtualized environment. Addressing your query of why you should go for a VPS, on a shared platform certain scripts that you would like to run may not be allowed. It also gives you some protection against sharing an IP with possibly hundreds of other clients.
