Sorry for the awful first post, but I really need help.

After being a constant customer of Site5 for 10 years, they've just utterly stuck it to me.

Their performance fell of a cliff a year or so ago, and I was constantly having to fix problems their servers seem to be causing.

In March I said I wanted to cancel but only once we'd negotiated compensation and help moving away.

They immediately took down all my websites.

I spent an age on their ticketed support system, and eventually they reinstated the websites, and the service limped on.

Now, 3 months later, they've taken down my sites again, saying it's in response to the cancellation request I made in March.

They're saying no backups were made since February, and it looks like I'm shafted.

Is there any online archive I might be able to use to recover an old version of my websites?

There's only one I care about - my sister-in-law's business website - it's screwing up her business.

I wouldn't even call myself an amateur at this stuff - I stumbled through Wordpress to set up her site, but it took ages, and I was really proud - her SEO was great and it was bringing in good business, but now Site 5 have completely ruined it all.

Thanks a lot for any help anyone can offer.

EIG claims another victim :violent:

The owner Matt died years ago he was only 20 something and ran a very respected firm. But they sold to EIG and it all turned bad.

You can try this https://web.archive.org/ but to use your analogy yes you are shafted if you don't have a backup and they don't either.

Another life lesson on backups.

Why type of hosting have you used at Site5? shared or VPS package?

I have ever visited their site but never used their services.

Thanks for sharing this experience.

Obviously if your/her site was downed for 1 or 2 days then it will affect SEO really, decrease indexed pages and keywords rankings, that's why we should go with hosting companies 99.99% uptime.
If I know your budget, I can offer you some good hosting companies on this forum, I'm also using one here.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know the sad story behind Site5's downfall.

In terms of budget , there isn't one really - I don't charge my sister-in-law anything, and don't really have much money to spare. I think I paid Site5 $120 every 2 years, so $5 a month - Ideally any new hosting wouldn't be much more than that.

I'd be after someone with excellent customer support, and ideally based in the UK - so, if they "do a Site5" I could take them to court them easily.

I have seen recommendations for hostinguk.net and I think I might blow the budget and go with them for £7 ($9) a month.

Way Back Machine can save your ass here, but for sure you have to "rebuild" all the wp website and data since you only will be able to get texts and some images.
Lesson n.1: run form EIG brands
lesson n.2: always backup

Good luck with your next provider.

Stan I don't want to be the barer of bad new here, but your pretty screwed. Not even the Way Back Machine is going to be able to help you. You may be able to get the texts and a few pictures like FloXera said. But its not going to be very helpful because you're going to have to rebuild every page. I don't know how big the website was but you have a lot of work ahead of you.

P.S. Even if your hosts says they make backups, my best advice that I can give is make your own backups and make backups of the backups.
