I basically have no money to invest at this time so I thought I might set up a hosting site which I'm very passionate about.

What's the best way to monetize a hosting site?

I already have some affiliate products related to my subject but are there other good ways to make more money? I've heard of AdSense but never tried it. Does this work for a hosting site?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Personally i don't like the idea of having flashing banners in my company website.
Adsense only give you peanuts. I think the best way for you to monetise your website is having clients using it. Ordering different products, buying services and spend there a lot of mon€y. All the others way are shortcuts that probably will end up showing to visitors how empty pockets you are :)

I have the same problem, no money, but that is not why I host websites, I do it for the reason you said {I'm very passionate about} I too would like you to keep that passion it is what makes the next FaceBook, now to earn money on hosting is not very hard just lots of work, here are a few steps:

1. Reseller account $5.00
2. Website WordPress Free
3. PayPal account Free
4. Post on Forums Free
5. Go to business for sales Free

That is one way to keep growing get the first ten accounts, then twenty, then fifty....
Hope this helps, Enjoy

I think charging for hosting is the right way to monetize it. Many hosting owners think that offering free hosting and monetizing with the ads as another way. And in reality that does not work. With more and more ad blocker coming out. And then accessing the content with free users, it'd be not fair in such case. You should charge for your effort. And keep the paid plans. That's how professional business sustain.

Monetizing with adsense is really not advisable . Apart from the fact that of recent, adsense is not really worth it, you'll still have to at one point of the other take action to get customers. So why not start now instead of wasting your time on adsense.

Can you elaborate this?
Why it is not advisable to make money from Google adsense?
I saw more people using Adsense on their websites/blogs and earning more money with it.
Of course is to apply to Adsense you need to have a high quality site with more traffic.

You can have quality site with high traffic but still earn nothing from Google Adsense. Not all site visitors click on ads and the use of Ad blockers on browsers make it difficult to earn clicks which is the basis for Adsense payments. Not saying it's useless, but most websites do earn peanuts from Adsense. it makes more sense to develop higher income generating revenue streams like selling products on the site and earning profits or commission from the sale. Besides that, Google Adsense is not the only source of advertising income. You can offer the site directly to advertisers at a higher rate than what Adsense can offer. That's assuming, of course, that your site has compelling content.
