Why hosting providers are still using PHP 5.x in servers?

PHP has the latest version now which is 7.1 but still many hosting providers are using PHP 5.x on their servers. which is highly security risk. which PHP version are you running on your server?

Because many users/customers and their applications are still using 5.x versions and are not compatible with higher php versions. We use 5.6 and higher in our servers.

But there are no updates now for php 5.6 it's in security support. why don't you update your servers to php 7.0 and 7.1 and ask your customers to upgrade? I know this is not a one day task. but gradually ask them to update.

We did that for sure, as long as its in security support there is no need to hurry about this.

Most hosts can upgrade or provide multiple php versions for customers. The problem is customers end, most of the them will be normal users, they do not know technology. So for such users hosting provider cannot do their website development to make it compitable with php7.

For upgrades to happen, both the host and customer should cooperate each other. Often customer needs to reinvest on development or developer to upgrade their website to work with new php version. This is a roadblock, as most of them do not like investing on web development regularly.

We have seen many people who say " I want to build a website that should work for 4 years atleast" So this is the customer way of thinking. Even if you tell them that regular maintainance and upgrades are necessary they do not care. If you want to work for free, you can work and upgrade the customer website, which is loss for developers. As do not get paid nor they get any appreciations.

So it takes time and money..Its not as easy as we say and too many dependencies exists in real world. Hope this clarifes your query.

Many of our clients are using scripts which is not created by them. So asking them to upgrade & they asking their developers to upgrade is a tedious task.

Better solution is to provide PHP 5.6 - PHP 7.1 all major versions through MultiPHP in WHM/cPanel

We have enabled all php versions, our clients can change from Multiphp in cpanel.
this will let them use their choice of php, and we will be not getting mails every 5 min to install x version of php for their cpanel

Mosts modules and sites are optimized for 5.x thats why they preffer to use a 5.x version in their php servers.

I agree with what SakamHost said, because most websites and platforms are running as well with php 5.x hence hosting providers will use which version that the most compatible with them.

Vice versa, if php 7.x supported all platforms then I think providers will use this version instead of php 5.x.

It is basically the older scripts still using PHP-5 that is the reason they are offering PHP-5
