I was just wondering whether someone assigned remote staff to work on Shifts according to a roaster, how do you figure out if they were on time or late and how do you handle remote staff being often late on their shifts and do you subtract from their salary or just advise and repeatedly advise !?... I think this is one major aspect that a lot are suffering of or at least facing difficulties to keep track of their staff attendance, so any ideas ?? for me I ask my engineer to inform on skype as soon as he steps in and before leaving, but i think better ways exist...

Never been a fan of remote staff, If I'm paying someone a salary I would want them present so I could see I was getting maximum value from my asset.
I'm sure some firms have great success with remote workers but the trust factor is a little to big for me. Not much more you can do than you have already done.

Performance monitoring in the main thing, if they are not performing they need to go.

Remote staff is tricky, like LJSHost mentioned trust is a big factor since we are dealing with delicate customer information. Best would be not to outsorce or hire staff remotely, not to mention the perks of having a staff BBQ now and then! Nothing beats the feeling of working among friends :)
If you feel like the remote staff is underperfoming chances are that they don't take their position too seriously.

How about working remote and working from anywhere? :)

A random beach in Hawaii. On a random trip to Tokyo. On a random BBQ with friends.

Remote is better for the workers, but I definitely get where business owners are coming from. You can still get some sort of a "trust factor" by recording their screens or tracking their time/clicks with an app. Your team can be online and communicating 24/7 via TeamSpeak or whatever.

Myself and my team (ThisHosting.Rocks) all work remote. We don't really do the digital nomad dream lifestyle, but we do work without any pants on :D. It all depends on what kind of a person you are, really. Anyone can still go on trips wherever and do their work from there, but nobody from our team does that. All of us "work from home"

However, we've built up a great relationship and we have great teamwork. We still use tools like Slack, Trello, TeamSpeak, TimeDoctor and what-not.

I have employed a dozen of remote staff because hiring someone close to me is nearly impossible since i don't have a registered business/office, also, i don't believe hiring someone close to you will be cheap especially for new starting businesses...

Most of the staff i hired were Indians (not hiring anymore) they were technically Excellent but that's it !.. some would be careless about working hours or so, but at the end they were all let go as they weren't giving my business REAL benefit, i found myself paying unnecessary salaries really and their absence did Not create a gap !...

Ive hired a new person who seems dependable but bit low on technical skills which is the main thing, now i have reconsidered his work responsibilities and i am a bit unsure whether he will like them or not... one main thing am suffering from is time attendance, and staff liking to have 2 days off (which is impossible) and claiming the pay is not very good for their situation (despite being relatively new business with not many customers) if things don't work with this guy, i guess ill have to settle for a REAL person working for me in real physical location, they shouldn't bee picky or needy when it comes to the pay as i already fulfilled the most important aspects for the business but providing 24x7 support is a MUST and can't survive without it !...

I had a very similar situation. I hired a few workers from India and they were somewhat knowledgeable, but they were really slacking off and not doing their job properly. They were really cheap, though, and I guess that's what attracts us the most. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Pro tip for finding a new remote worker: look for them on freelancing sites like Upwork. Only pick freelancers that have great rating and feedback. You'll probably have to pay them more.

Freelance websites carry additional 20% commission charges. You could definitely approach an Indian based Server Management company by checking out their reviews & ratings. Many of them do have good English communication skills & are highly certified.
