Secure Socket Layer is a way of making your website secure from various attacks. If your website consist of any information that needs to be secured : passwords, credit cards or any type of data then you must use SSL.
If you have a static website with no data that needs to be secured then it's no mean that any hacker can take advantage of it.

I wonder why you have stated such a question. SSL is a mandatory thing for websites, Almost more than 80% of websites are using an SSL certificate. Moreover most hosting providers give it as free. An SSL will secure your sensitive information on your website while sending/receiving from a user. As you know cyber-attacks are everywhere and our servers are not protected. So SSL is the least thing a common website owner can do from his part as a security.

For now, Google want's your site to be using SSL on all parts that require logins or payment details. This should be happening on all site regardless of what Google wants though. Google and the Chrome browser will also now notify people more clearly due to the fact that people are just getting used to non-secure sites and continuing anyway. Eventually all pages on a site will need to be starting with https. https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2016/10/avoid-not-secure-warn

Most of sites prefer to enable HTTPS on their website but as per the Google's report, still there are many popular sites which have not moved to this security when everyone is talking about it. People probably underestimate the value of HTTPS, but one of the most important aspect is Google ranking boost. Importantly SSL helps to protect data traveling between clients' browsers and server. Except Google ranking, Browsers are spreading awareness by embossing warning message in address bar and login box. You can browse more reasons here.

SSL used to be an optional addon for websites before 2016. Now starting January 2017, SSL is must and google started non SSL websites as unsecure.

You can read here:

https://support.google.com/chrome/a...71683-1799624872&p=ui_security_indicator&rd=1

Moreover SSL not only adds enrcyption, but also boosts SERPs and SEO authority of your website. So, in 2017 If you ask me "Steve, is SSL certificate necessary ? I will say Yes."

Most hosts are offering CPanel Auto SSL or LetsEcrypt SSL Certificates for free, at rankmyhub we have been offering SSLs free of cost for all domains hosted with us.

If you have letsencrypt SSL Addon in you cpanel. Watch this video to learn how to install it:

https://youtu.be/YpyCXjxRv_U

Hope this helps you. Having SSL helps you rank better and keep the communication encrypted. Thank you.

SSL certs are free these days, no reason not to use one. Security + SEO benefits + customer confidence are the main reasons.

SSL is not mandatory for all websites. It is highly recommended though.

It's mandatory for ecommerce sites. Especially in UK, you need to be compliant to a level to handle payments online.

SSL will also not protect you from being subject of an attack, nothing can stop you being attacked in fact, but it still certainly prevents a third party from the info that is being sent across a connection.

When Google announced that they place weight on sites who are more secure, everyone jumped on the SSL bandwagon. Getting an SSL won't instantly get you better rankings either. I mean, sure it helps, if it's relevant. But it is certainly not the sole contributing factor.

If you can get an SSL, get one. It's a no brainer.

Short answer: Yes!

Long answer: Nowadays any decent web hosting provider should offer shared SSL certificates on their shared hosting plans. The requirements to install a SSL certificate changed, there is no need of a dedicated IP per certificate anymore. Not to mention googles ranking prioritization of encryped websites over those who do not use a SSL.

Like others have mentioned above a SSL certificate is a must when running a e-commerce or any websites which stores clients/users personal details. However in those cases its best to use a paid SSL over a free service such as Let's encrypt, the main reason for this is trust relations between the business and clients. The main differencet between paid and free certificates is the warranty behind them, some come with a 10.000$ and even up to a few million USD of warranty.

Hello,
Well the question seems rootless though I would like to reply.
Yes, I too use SSL for all my websites.
And reason is pretty simple SSL provides us security over various attacks like DDOS or brute force attack or so.
And yes it also provide surety to user of the sites that there data is secured genuinely.

SSL is a must for any website. It secures the sensitive data like password, credit card information, user's personal profile information, etc. You don't have to worry much about SSL becasue it is provided for free by many good hosting providers which can setup by simply one click. For eg: Cloudways.

Google chrome already marks 'non https' websites as insecure. They announced that they will make it even more clear in future updates, so having a SSL certificate is surely something you will need in the short future.

Hello Harry,

A lot of people use SSL Certificates on their websites, as they become easier and easier to gain access to, often for free.

Most sites don't 'need' SSL, however google penalises sites without SSL and numerous major browsers are looking into showing a security warning for sites without SSL.

Even my blog with very few readers, and only myself as an account holde, and it has complete SSL Throughout as it doesn't effect the site itself and improves user experience as there's a lovely green/black lock.

Rather ironically, this forum only just got SSL recently, and this page won't show a lock. Simply becuase there's one or more websites/links that aren't protected by SSL. Using Internet Explorer will/should cause a security warning to appear saying that some unsecured content has been blocked.

Hopefully I answered your questions throughly, if not feel free to ask further questions.

Best Regards,
Kieran Cairns

Our sites use SSL and believe it helps protects our data on payments on sensitive areas, with the increase of rankings and now google asking to ensure we have SSL which helps boost some sites is all good too so having SSL is a good all rounder, both security for your sites users and rankings.

SSL is good for important data that is transferred over the internet, so when hackers steal your data they get a random @(!^#!@^#!@# instead if your actual password. EG. a techie dude from starbucks can steal whatever info sent through wifi from u, imagine if u had sent your credit card info to a non SSL site, he would get the data immediately.

However, it is also important to note that SSL does take up more computing power than a standard non SSL site. So you may experience slowdowns if you are using a normal shared hosting with process/cpu limits and handle a lot of visitors. So, to be frank, if your site uses important data like IDs/passwords/banking info, get SSL on it, if not, well, you could skip it entirely.

Most hosts offer free SSL certs these days thanks to products like Let's Encrypt

I heard that SSL will encrypt data but I don't know how it works.
I tried to move some sites to SSL but it doesn't help increasing rankings as expected.

SSL is a must if you have any kind of script that stores a people details!
These days you can get free SSL from your hosting provider thanks to Let's Encrypt for that and i also think in the future SSL will be must for every site.
