I want to test my internet connection's performance, can I check it with a tool from my web browser or directly check from my computer? and my Wi-Fi's speed is the same as my home internet connection?

If you want to test your internet connection, you can do it easily with the website speedtest, but to test your own wifi you will have to transfer a file between to computer of your local network.

Best way to check your internet speed is to put your computer in (if linux rescue mode) (if windows safe mode with networking), use LAN cable from your modem/router to your computer (because wi-fi will not give best test) and test it in speedtest.net or http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest choose cable if you use with LAN. Because testing your internet speed without rescue mode/safe mode you will never get exact speed which your provider gaves to you due for many applications on your computers hanging it.

I always use http://beta.speedtest.net/

I am not sure if there are other options out there. Some providers will actually have their own as well. You can call and ask if you provider has a testing page.

A good speedtest HTML5 based is speedof.me

It's quite good, you also have the 'known' alternative Speedtest.net of course.

You can use websites like

fast.com

speedof.me

testmy.net

I used all the above and they are simple and easy to use for testing purpose. Make sure that you disconnect other computers and other devices on wifi before you start speed test. Use a single browser and run speed test.

As suggested by other members, running speed test in safe mode will give more accurate results. Its better to do tests in different times of day and aggregate results for better speed average scores offered by your broadband provider.

Hope this helps you. Thank you

I have used speedtest.net to check my internet speed. However, I have never used use any of the sites you have mentioned above. I will try to test my connection speed on these sites and see whether the result is same.

You can always look for one speed tester on any search engine, I use www.speedtest.net and it work very good for me, but you will judge that, also you can always look for more speed testers on the internet.

As everyone knows it's better to use the speed test site implemented by the ISP that we use, but giving the fact that currently the site's down for my provider, I use speedtest.net(created by Ookla), pretty fast to load, has a friendly UI and automatically detects the nearest internet testing server using your ip address. The only defect that it has is that it actually uses flash to operate

Even if the generic speed testing sites can be precise, the ISP ones oftenly includes bandwith tests that are adapted to what they offer. Thanks for letting me know about the availability of speedtest's new version! I wasn't aware of it, however, it seems to be in beta, the legacy site (which is in the main address) has not been completely deprecated, maybe they haven't finished the tests on it? Again thanks for letting me know!

Most probably is they want you to probe to their server for your internet connection speed. I have worked on an ISP on field environment when I was in college for my on-the-job-training, and what they make/what they do on testing the end users speed was to go to speedtest.net and click on the location where their server is located. I think they do that to get a much accurate test result and will be easier for them to pin-point where the slow down occurs, because they can also test it via their equipment outside before termination on the end user. Also it makes it easier for them to explain what is problem.

It's quite well-known that there are a few sites. speedtest.net is common, but there's also sites like speedof.me, which uses HTML5, and fast.com, which uses Netflix's servers. fast.com can help you to detect if your ISP is throttling certain sites.

I'm currently using Speedof.me.
It is a HTML5-based speed test that replicates real-world browsing
Speedof.me requests a series of files in increasing size and records the speed at which they're downloaded.
Speedtest.net is a decent tool for me in the past but I have experienced some issues with the Flash applet as of late.

+1 for speedtest.net. They also have mobile apps for iOS, Android and Windows if you want to test it on your phone.

I always use www.speedtest.net. But keep in mind unless your using wireless "AC" your wifi speeds are going to be a lot slower then if you had a direct connection (ethernet) to the internet. Wireless N seems to cap out around 40~70mbps depending on your router.
