Hello everyone,

Right now I am having an old community that running on PHPBB software and I have other licenses to commercial licenses. I own a IPB and two vBulletin licenses, they were used to build forums in the past but not succeeded.

I wanted to start one with Xenforo because its a good community script to get started with because it is recommended by webmasters today.

I love IPB a lot more then vBulletin 5 just because the supporting community, better securutiy and built in features. On the other hand, vBulletin is also a good choice because its easy to customize parts on it but vBulletin is known to be very unsportive and buggy for the most part.

Any ideas? Which forum software should I go with?

If these are the options you have then I would say you choose VB5, as you already have the license. Trying Xenforo will be like spending additional money.

IPB provides many extras, such as IP.Nexus, which provides plenty of integration, ecommerce and more, it's a good choice.

MyBB is good and secure forum. You can customize the theme. You do have options for setting the security. You can block the users and provide the restricted access for the users too. You can modify the template as you want. You can create the various sections on MyBB forum.

So I would suggest, go with MyBB it's simple and well organised.

I think if you can afford it you should go with Xenforo. Its super slick and easy to use and has hardly any security problems. Matter of fact is a lot of the forums on the internet are now changing to Xenforo. And Xenforo 2 is going to be released soon and its super modern and a free upgrade if you own Xenforo 1.5. :icon_rock:

If you are just starting out, you should go with a free forum software. Some of the open source forum scripts are MyBB, PhpBB, SMF etc. You can use one of these. There are not only free to use but also some of the best forum scripts. There are of course premium forum scrips however, open source scripts are equally better.

In my opinion this would come down to making a decision on if you want to spend extra money or not.

If you are not looking to spend the extra money on buying a Xenforo license then use one of the paid licenses that you already have. Personally from those two I like vBulletin the best but that can come down to personal preference.

If you don't mind spending the extra money then go with Xenforo. There is a lot of things happening with Xenforo and there are a lot of forums that are running that software being built so it's popularity is growing and that can mean good things as a forum owner running their software.

I personally think that the price of getting a Xenforo license will be well worth it and you'll be happy that you bought it.

You can also sell the licenses that you have for the other forum softwares so you really wouldn't have to write the price of the license off as a purchase but more of a trade.
