If I build all web-related things my own, the hardest thing would be developing the features/web-applications.
But if you are a professional coder then this will not be a problem or even you are not good at codes, you can hire someone to do it for you.
When the problem is how much money you are having to hire freelancers to do works on your site :D

If it's for SEO purpose, then it would be the hardest part as SEO is never ending competition.
According to me, this is not the hardest parts of SEO because you can win your competitors.
The hardest one may be how to do SEO right way and getting high rankings on top search which will help you win all your competitors that you don't need to care how they are.

Nothing is difficult, if you are good learner. :) Below are the hard task in web-development -

1. Domain name selection - You should select short, meaningful and unique domain name for your website so always take time for selecting the domain name.

2. Choosing web hosting service and web hosting - Study the market and select the web hosting accordingly. Also, study the requirement and future scope of your website so you can sing-up for the required web hosting plan. Because if your website is of 4 to 5 pages and you will buy VPS for it then it's cost consuming.

3. Website development platform - You will have to choose the Linux or Windows web hosting platform according to your need.

4. Responsive website - You should develop the website which should work on desktop, laptop as well as mobile, tablet etc. So your website should be responsive.

5. Attractive and user friendly site - Your website should look attractive and easy to understand for the users.

6. Marketing - It's very hard part. You should make good SEO so your website get top rank and will reach to people.

Inclusion of javascripts is quite a nail-biting task when building a site. Adding of more javascripts affects the site speed.

If you create your blog around what you are passionate about then everything will be easy and fun even when you are facing challenges starting out.
Working online is also the same as offline, the only difference is that the formal is preferable & makes you work from anywhere in the world even right from your room. It's the same people that are offline that goes online to see your content&offers.
Many people think when you are starting out online, you don't need to do much work and that's what I thought at the beginning.I can remember quite vividly when I first started, created 5posts on my blog, went to sleep and waiting for results. But I saw none.
That's when I now discovered that you need to treat your blog the same way you treat your offline business such as getting good domain name that matches your blog, creating or outsourcing great content frequently&monitoring it, responding to feedback from subscribers&site visitors, learning about how to optimize & get the full advantage from the site and more.
What I failed to understand is how everything works in general though the passion was there. I went through a learning curve. I don't even know that a site interface matters a lot, later I hired a UX developer for it.Since that first experience, I can create&work on the new site without stress because I've gotten more experience from my first experience.
To me, I think your first site matters a lot.

With all of the tools there are out there to make your own websites online, easily the hardest part of making a website now is coming up with decent content. Especially something that will make the website worthwhile for you to run. What you don't want is something that'll die a slow death with very little traffic.

Although I am still a newbie in this, I can say the hardest part for me is styling, the css. I spend much time trying colors to get the one that can fit the niche of the website.

The hardest part for me is creating content suitable as an introduction. As much as we can pay freelancers to create content. Attracting the first wave of traffic is pretty difficult for me from my previous experiences.

I also usually have problems to fill up the website template with relevant and quality items. This is why it's vital to draft our everything as an actual plan so that execution of the project will be neater and detailed.

Well I think the hardest part of making a new website is the domain name. Because it's almost next to impossible to find a good .com. And then the next problem is finding good hosting. And the next problem is picking out your skin and graphics. And after all of that is done the next hardest part is going to be driving traffic to your website.

The hardest part is always getting the visitors once the website is online.

stew4,

I think this is a very crucial point. As creators, and writers, we always have to be very conscious of the needs of our audience, and if they are unable to navigate, in easy ways, and logical ways, what we present to them, they will definitely quit coming back. I would be the same way about sites which are not user-friendly. I do not have the expertise to create my own sites, nor the budget to pay web designers, so I am stuck with templates, currentl. I am trying to find the most user-friendly cheap or free templates.
