Someone once told me, if I can afford it, to buy up all the major domain extensions and use a redirect to the main one be it .COM or .NET

I haven't done this myself, has anyone on here done it? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to having coverage over other extensions with your brand?

It is weird for this case, why you want to buy all the major domain extensions and using them to redirect to your main domain, what is your purpose this?

Unless it is a premium domain or expired domains with good traffic and you want to keep it (redirecting to any domains) before making a website for it then I think it can be done.
Other than that, I don't see any advantages of redirecting many domains to main domains.

This is an excellent idea if you have the budget to do so. Plenty of times I will forget if a website is .com, .net, etc. This will help retain traffic better and also protect your brand.

I normally stick with the .com's, .net and .org but there are some extensions as of late that have been garnering a lot of interest, especially .io ones.

dot io is commonly used by startups and web services, it's about $30 a year to register so a lot more expensive than the .com, but potentially easier to get a keyword rich or short/brandable domain that may have someone else holding onto that domain for potential resale as a "premium domain".

Always buy domain name extension according to your category of niche. But .com domain name extension is useful for any online business, .org used for organization and .gov can be used for government websites. Yes, you can redirect your domain extension. Can you tell me? why are you doing this?

I think this way was the past because domain providers will want to sell many domains as possible and they will suggest their customers to buy same domains around main domain to protect the brand name. That's only a way to encourage sales.

The idea is to keep others from using your name. It is a way of avoiding confusion and being the only source for said "name". Twitter does it but uses the wrong extension to tell you to go to the right one.

I'm not doing anything, I am asking for opinions on buying more than one for redirects.

This was the idea behind it. It is to protect the brand name. No one else can have a business under the same name thus no confusion.

I've never done it but always wanted to. Always thought it was a good idea to do that so no one can rip you off later down the line. Then again I thought what was the need for these extra domains to begin with panels ? client areas etc. but then I say damn to many ideas all at once lol

Recent legislation actually protects domain names from trademark infringements. So it is no longer necessary to register your domain in every unique TLD. (Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to sell you 40 domain registrations! :beernow:)

This is something I actually did not know so thanks for the heads up on that. I wasn't thinking of legal action but knowing this, there really isn't much of a need I guess.

Hello,
There is no such hard and fast rules for doing so but yes it would be recommended if you want so.
Some of the domain extension may be owned by you apart from .com it would be beneficial.

This is a MUST for me, if you've got the budget purchase the com/org/net/co/io/.co.uk and any other local TLD'S or ones related to your niche such as .host and .hosting. For small business you can usually get away with just the .com, but if you plan on been a large business and don't currently own the trademark, or don't want to fight in lawsuits, just register the major domain extensions to prevent fraud and legal battles.

I haven't done this myself, has anyone on here done it?
I've unfortunately not been able to do this, but I would if I had the budget.

There's tons of advantages including traffic for mistypes and protecting your brand identity. The only disadvantage is the cost which can rack up quickly, especially if the domain registrar raises their prices.

I first try for .com's and if I dont get the domain name then try for .net or .in (location based) domain name. If your main domain name has a good seo ranking then I dont think you will need many forwarding domain names, because you will be spending more than required.

I once bought couple of domain extensions for the same domain name. I did so because I did not want anyone to use that domain with another extension of course. When I had to renew, I paid quite a big sum. Therefore, I decided registeing all domain extension does not worth it.

I have registered the .com, .net, .org in the past and to be honest unless you're some huge website it's just not worth it. Because everyone is going to go to the .com first anyway. Just save yourself a boat load of money and just register the .com and be done with it.

If your website is a really popular one, and you rely on branding, then it's usually a good idea to buy some of the most widely used extensions (that are typical of your niche) and then redirect them to your main site. Also, some people advice to buy misspelled versions of your domain name again in order to prevent your competitors from stealing your clients or readers by creating a domain name that looks and sounds like yours. But, of course, this undertaking requires having a bigger budget.

I still don't understand why do they offer the other extensions once you chose the domain name, the only reason I would accept such an offer is to prevent somebody from having the same name I have, and benefit from my traffic.

Well that's a big reason why a lot of domain owners buy their domain in some or several of the top domain extensions, for traffic loss prevention.

They also do it for brand protection to prevent someone else from not only benefiting from their traffic but from their success as well.

When I register a domain and I am going to be building a website that I am planning on keeping I at least buy the .net version just to be safe. Many of the top companies buy many different extensions of their domain for this reason.

If you can afford it then why not, right?

If you can afford em, you should buy .com/net/country of your origin/potential client base in my opinion, to protect the brand name

This technique is commonly used by huge brands like Facebook, Twitter etc. So your purpose is redirecting the traffic based on that technique, and of course, you can afford it, I guess it would be good.

I never buy a domain extension for my website. I created a website once and hosted for free and i cant remember what website are those. The disadvantage of this is you cannot promote them in social medias because they see it as a scam or phishing activity. If you are trying ti buy good extension for your website use .COM extension the popular the better but it will cost you higher money amount.
