Can you tell me what is the difference between shared and dedicated IP address? How to check if I am using a dedicated IP or a shared IP?

Shared IP adddress is used by other users for web hosting. Most popular in shared hosting environments.

Dedicated IP address only you have access on that IP address noone else can use it to send any data. Mostly done on VPS and dedicated servers.

shared IP address will have everyone on the server using the same IP address so in example 1.1.1.23/~cpanelusername then 1.1.1.23/~yourusername get the dedicated ip if u want to be alone and have an SSL certificate on your site.

As you said then the IP address on the VPS or dedicated server is provided by my web host, that's an dedicated IP address?
I am going to use SSL for my website and SSL required a dedicated server to setup it, can I set ssl for an account in my hosting? or I need to have a separated IP for each account to use SSL.

That wont be an issue, nowadays you can install SSL certificates on any cPanel account with or without a dedicated IP. As long you have a valid SSL certificate to support the required amount of domains you should be fine :icon_mrgreen:

is you server only hosting your website? if so then that should be a dedicated IP if I'm not mistaking but if you got it virtualized then you have to give the vps a IP then in the control panel create the SSL CERT. but If u want a multiple SSL in example https://mail.domain.com/ and https://billing.domain.com/ https://support.domain.com u going to need a SSL wildcard for that.

Why not install lets Encrpyt and enable SSL by default with AutoSSL or other similar ways?

A shared IP can be used for many websites, most web hosts will host hundreds of websites on a single IP address. A dedicated IP is 1 unique IP address for 1 website. This was especially useful in the past for SSL certificates, but now shared SSL and SNI is a thing, so a dedicated IP isn't as useful.

As for your other concern - Use CloudFlare or Letsencrypt, they offer free SSL certificates for any number of domains and sub domains.

In Shared IP you can add multiple sites on web server.
Dedicated IP is assigned for only single websites, dedicated IP is mainly used for big websites like "ECOMMERCE"

The different between shared and dedicated IP are shared IP is shared among different websites that are on the shared server. The websites on the shared server are blocked or blacklist the all the websites on the shared IP may also face the bad repute.

A dedicated IP address has an own IP address for the website and it grants access to the website whenever needed even when the DNS setting for the domain name is not changed. Increases the credibility of the email sender. Proves better for the installation of SSL certificate on the website.

There is no such requirements like you need a dedicated ip address for ssl if you are hosted your website in a shared hosting environment, also most hosting companies take advantage of Lets encrypt ssl as its free from cpanel. But it is good to have a dedicated ip address as this will be your genuine dedicated ip address and others can't even use it. so your ip reputation will be high and free from spamming.

shared ip is pretty much like your local network IP the one you get when connecting to your home or school wifi router, it goes like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x or something else, while the dedicated IP is a unique real internet ip only for YOU no body else and that my friend costs $$$ :)

Shared IP
A shared IP is an IP address that is used for multiple sites. A shared IP can host all sites on a webserver. Because the IP address of a website is used for various sites on the server the actions of one site owner can affect everyone on the server.

Dedicated IP
A dedicated IP is an IP address that is assigned to one site. Large websites or e-commerce sites have dedicated IP addresses that host only one domain. If a site handles payment processing directly and not through a third party such as PayPal, the site must use SSL and therefore will need to be on a dedicated IP address.

192.168.x.x is not a shared IP address this range is a private Ip address used my ISP's and router that link you to the outside world in a home/office environment. This is not that's he's means about dedicated/Shared IP's Address.

Below is a great answer.

Hello ,
Shared IP : As name suggests that it is shared IP so when we say shared IP then that IP would be used or shared by multiple sites.
More then one domain will be pointing on that same IP.
Mostly we see these type of shared IPs on panels.

Dedicated IP : Dedicated IP is dedicated to only one server and mostly the heavy sites use the dedicated IP only.

In Shared IP many websites share the same IP address.
In Dedicated IP you are not sharing with any other websites. The IP address is dedicated only for your website.

With a shared IP everyone runs their website under the same IP address. Under a dedicated IP address, only your website has that IP address assigned. This can be useful for email reputation (if your shared IP address is blacklisted somewhere, you will be affected too).

However, you do not require a dedicated IP for other features such as a SSL Certificate.

It is an obvious explanation. I am just confused if I use a dedicated IP on a website on a shared server then when my site gets DDoS attacks then attacks will be diretly sent to my dedicated IP or my server? what will accommodate this?

I still don't understand why needs a dedicated IP in this case.
Is it better for security if using dedicated IP with SSL?

>> I still don't understand why needs a dedicated IP
You can have Dedicated IP for your web site on shared server as well. Just you need to contact your hosting provider to get it. It will cost you additional (From $2 to $4 per month) price varies as per provider.

>> Is it better for security if using dedicated IP with SSL
It is always better to have dedicated IP for your web site as this ensures that it main IP on server gets blacklisted due to spamming by other user/domain then the mail for your domain/website will not be affected by that. SSL will add advantage it will encrypt important data if you are running eCommerce sites.

A shared IP will not protect you from a ddos, per se. Its still an IP address. The terms "shared" v. "dedicated" refers to the server's configuration, not the IP itself. Each type of configuration serves a specific purpose. One purpose for a "shared" configuration is it provides the host with a way to host many web sites with using only 1 IP address (IP addresses is a finite resource). One purpose for a "dedicated" IP is to implement SSL

I still don't understand why needs a dedicated IP in this case.

Yes, in some instances. Free SSL Lets Encrypt is limited to basic SSL certificates, which means it only provides for the lowest level of SSL validation which validates that you own the domain that you are certifying. This works fine if all you need to do is secure you're content, but you don't need more vigorous validation that provides extended company identification (you won't get the full company green bar). If you want the green bar you will need to buy a certificate with Extended Validation from a commercial certificate authority.

These are your relevant (but not exhaustive) choices

  • Free (Lets Encrypt) basic SSL on shared IP (SNI)
  • Commercial SSL+EV on Shared IP (SNI)
  • Commercial SSL+EV on Dedicated IP (no SNI, best all-around)

If you need to assure your visitors that your site is secure use the 2nd or third option

Dedicated IP is not needed, you can get PCI DSS compilance, HIPPA also passed even with shared IP with letsencrypt. Dedicated IP is only needed when your website is a payment gateway or your website processes payments. Nowadays, most websites use Paypal, or other payment gateway.

So dedicated IP is of zero use. It may be useful if you are investing on Extended validation SSL certificate for your website, even in that case you need to buy wildcard EV SSL because you are saying that you have a VPS with several other websites. So do not waste money on it, if you do not need such sort of things.

Your host may be upselling you dedicated IP, because you do not know how things work. Now SNI is almost as standard in industry and with shared IP, ssls can be issued for may websites without any issues. In such a modern world dedicated IP for ssl is strange, atleast in my assumption that you are just a normal VPS user with bunch of websites run by your for your business or clients.

Ask them to update your cpanel to latest version which has letsencrypt and autossl plugins enabled by cpanel itself. Which can be used to allot ssl certificates to as many domains as you want and use on your VPS.

If you still do not want to mess up anything or hesitate to ask your host, simply signup with cloudflare which offers DV SSL with 10 years validity, it is called cloudflare origin SSL. You can install it and enjoy hassle free SSL on your entire websites.

One more thing, even if you buy dedicated IP, that is not fresh, it may be used by someother customer in the past and lying idle with your host. So they allot it to you now, its that simple. If you leave them, they pass it on to other customer, its a cycle.

Hope this helps and solves your question.
