Does a forum need a stronger web host? Note that for the blog it would depend on how many visitors or other factors but can be wrong for forums because forums have many plugins and tasks to run. My question is a forum can run smoothly on a shared hosting? or it is better if it run on a VPS or dedicated server?

It can run smoothly, the main question is how many daily and simultaneous visitors are you expecting?

Shared hosting is just a way of grouping and allocating resources. As long as the provider allocates the necessary resources to you, it should be just fine. In fact, I have seen many shared hosting accounts perform better than a VPS. All about what's on the inside.

Depends on the forum and how much activity the site has. If you have a new or small - medium forum you should be ok starting with shared and upgrading to a VPS when you feel the need.

Sure. If the forum software requires a certain amount of RAM or cpu to run smoothly though this may be a limitation for a shared hosting plan. You would then need to start looking at a VPS or dedicated server.

Yeah you can run a forum on shared hosting if you are using a decent hosting service provider. It could run better on a good VPS or Dedicated Server but unless you have a really busy forum you shouldn't be needing those kind of resources.

I would say the the quality of the hosting is the main thing to look after. After that then a lot will depend on the software that you are using for the forum.

My question is a forum can run smoothly on a shared hosting?
Most forums that are not big in size or traffic (and even some that are) are run on shared hosting since everyone seems to want their own forum these days. Shared web hosting will work (as long as it's not getting huge traffic numbers and is on good software) if it's with a good host and has good resources and all other important aspects are appropriate.

it is better if it run on a VPS or dedicated server?
It can run better if the shared hosting you are using or thinking of using is not good but you will not need it if this is a new forum with low initial traffic.

If you are operating a serious forum with lots of visitors a day, I will recommend at least a VPS for you.
Don't fall prey to the gimmicks of UNLIMITED hosting.
Once your forum becomes busy you will start experiencing time out.

From experience.

There is no need to start out a forum on a VPS. That's like buying a Ferrari to use to go grocery shopping. The sad fact is that 99% of all new forums fail! So its best to start out on shared hosting and move to a vps when its needed. Most shared web hosts can support 15~40 active users on a forum before you start running into problems. And its going to take awhile for a new forum to achieve that!

Any website will run better on a VPS or dedicated server. Unless you are serving many concurrent requests or want/need the additional control that a VPS gives you, go with shared hosting.

This isn't necessarily always true because there are far more variables that come into play than just dedicated resources.

1. Server Location
2. Node Resources
3. Latency
4. Load averages

I agree but as a general rule of thumb, what I said applies. If we want to get into the details, then yes - location, nodes, latency, and load averages surely should factor in.

I would argue that this isn't a general rule of thumb. The structure of shared hosting on its own doesn't significantly decrease performance. It is simply a way of organizing the file and permission structure of a parent node. I would much rather run a website on shared hosting with one other client on that server than on a VPS that has tens of other clients with VPS on the parent node.

Theorhetically speaking it would definitely run better on a vps or dedi if you have high load , but if you get a few visitors per day or small to medium loads then a shared hosting is perfect.

It's can or can not depend with your web site traffic and usage and your forum category. Please ask from your hosting provider before host your forum web site. otherwise you will face service suspension or data termination

Yes a forum can run on shared hosting without any doubt? But still If your forum has more members and much plugins etc then i would suggest you to go with VPS because on shared environment there are lots of other problems which you can't take it as a forum members such as ddos attack on the shared ip, php configuration issues etc. If you want to host your forum on the dedicated and you don't have much budget for that.. then i would suggest you to go with OVH associates soyoustart.com they provide very good servers with ddos protection and they also provide cheaper server in the market.

I hope this information is enough for you :)

Yes, a forum can easily run on shared hosting. Will it be optimally the best solution? NO. You will have to consider the load that your website receives every second and weather your shared hosting can accumulate this growing load.

it depends on the forum traffic you have and the hardware your hosting provider is assigning and amount of customers on that server !...

Hello,
If the question is can a forum run on a shared hosting.
Then yes it can be run on the Shared hosting.
But I would not suggest you to do so.
As it would create a problem in future.

I have a forum which is in shared hosting and till date I never had a problem. Shared Hosting is best for start up websites and small to medium websites. You can use shared hosting until you gain popularity which will take long time, its not easy to get many visitors to your forum in just days, I would say start with shared and then try out VPS.

It can run on shared hosting as long as your forum software is light weight, less traffic, concurrent users and other things are minimal. As long as your user base is less and less number of resources are needed for your stable operation. You will not run into any issues. But VPS is recommended, if you want better performance.

Again, you need to know how to manage your VPS and tweak it for your forum software optimal performance. If you are starting up, try any shared hosting provider that meets your forum software minimum requirements. Run it for a month or two, monitor it and you will have data to take further actions.

Hope this helps you. Thank you.

A forum is an online discussion board, and one can run a forum in shared hosting, but as the forum grows in popularity, the number of users will increase on the forum. When this happens, the shared hosting plan has to be upgraded to VPS, dedicated or cloud hosting server so that the forum website functions efficiently and the users do not face any issues on the forum.

Yeah it can.

Make sure to use a web host that uses Cloudlinux and can let you know what your server limits are (they'll be displayed in cPanel).

This way, you can get started with your forum on a lower cost account, but as it grows, and you begin to use your allocated RAM, you can then upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server.

With the cloud, this is a lot easier than it was 10 years ago!

Why it needs Cloudlinux to host a forum?

I suppose a forum can quite run on a shared without a problem, the problem is depends on the size of the forum.

Cloudlinux allocates resources to each account.

Once you start hitting these limits you'll begin to see 503 errors on your site as well as the stats in cPanel.

This is much better than being randomly suspended by a web host when you have no idea what limits you're reaching.

When you start reaching these, you know it's time to upgrade to a larger hosting package or VPS.
