On a VPS I am running WHM/cPanel for it and today I got this email.

Current kernel version is out of date. running kernel: 2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.x86_64, most recent kernel: 2.6.32-642.13.2.el6.x86_64 Update the system's software by running 'yum update' from the command line and reboot the system.

In order to resolve these security concerns, log in to WHM and navigate to the Security Advisor” interface
Has anyone got same notification as me? Should I run yum update now?

It's not essential unless you have a problem with the current kernel or it has know exploits/problems. But yes I would say it's best to upgrade.

Always keep your server up-to-date. Don't worry about reboot, you can schedule reboot in out of business hours, but its very important to keep it up-to-date.

Just for your information just couple of days before new kernel version released.

You should definitely keep up your server to date! For anyone who doesn't know how I'm leaving these simple steps to do it:

-> If you wish to send cPanel the log files from your update attempt, click the appropriate checkbox.
-> If you wish to disable this option, disable the Send information about server usage to cPanel for analysis option in WHM's Tweak Settings interface (Home >> Server Configuration >> Tweak Settings).
->If you wish to force a reinstall of the software, select the appropriate checkbox.
Click Click to Upgrade.

You can learn more about the updates on the official website

Cheers!

If you are familiar with SSH access then you can just fire below command for updating the Kernel-

1. Login to your server with SSH access. Make sure you've root access.
2. Fire yum update
3. It will ask for kernel update, that time accept the message.
3. Reboot the server after update.
Please note, if you are not familiar with the process then ask your system administrator to fire the command.

It is not essential that everyone using cPanel should get it, rather it is based on how you manage your server. If you do regualr OS updates, do reboot your system after a kernel update you may likely do not receive such alerts. But if you do not takecare of such things, you may receive such notices. Of course yes, it is recommended to go ahead with the update and reboot because otherwise you may miss some importnant security updates for the kernel.

There are other things like KernelCare, which helps you to apply the patches without a reboot. But it is not a free application. With such patching software, you can instruct to automatically patch kerbel and load the patches without a system reboot.

Can this do on cPanel? and if yes, I should enable it to update automatically?

Server updates are one thing, but kernel updates almost always include important security patches, which should be applied without delay. If your server softwares are not updated right away, this is generally not going to have a major impact of any kind.

Kernel patches should be treated with much greater importance and you should apply the updates at the earliest convenience.
