VPN is a method of connecting securely to something via a public network like the internet that we use.
You would use a VPN if you needed to access something secure on your own server from a remote public location.

VPS is a Virtual Private Server. Something you use to host a website or application.

A VPS sort of sits in between Shared hosting and Dedicated Servers.

In Dedicated Servers, you get the whole server to yourself and the resources on it.
In Shared Hosting you are one in many (possibly hundreds) users sharing the same resource space.

A vps strikes a balance, gives you more than shared hosting, but doesn't give you exclusive use like you do in a Dedicated Server.
For simplicity sake, imagine a VPS Is a dedicated server split into lesser chunks ( allocated to less people) so that there are less users to share the resources. So instead of being 1 in 100, you are 1 in 3.

I don't understand this completely
Do I need a hardware to enable VPN? or just needing configurations to access my hosting server from my remote location securely?

To add to Datacenterplus' perfect answer, you can host a VPN on a VPS. You can use OpenVPN and install it on a VPS.

VPN is one of the services that can run into a Dedicated Sever or VPS.

Purpose of VPN is establishing secure connection between two end, you and the vpn sever

well, VPS basically creates a virtual private network that is basically made with a help of a vps or a dedicated server to relocate you and your services virtually. you could be in some country and use VPN to show that you are somewhere else and hence VPN is widely used by people who want to use services that are not available in their country. VPS that is, Virtual Private Server on the other hand means a server that has dedicated resources and has a lot of capabilities like hosting sites, files, games and what not.

Can you give me an example to make this clear?

How to create or have VPN? and how to access my VPS through VPN?

This pretty new to me anyway.

Theoretically VPN allows you to send/receive data across other networks, shared or public, same as it is in a private network. Consider it as a way to browse the Internet securely and anonymously. It ensure data your are sending/receiving is secured and encrypted.

VPN is software
VPS is hardware

VPN is a private network method. It is simply a secure way to make a connection online whether it be used for your server or browsing the internet.

You can find VPN software by doing a quick Google search. Here is a good article

Lets say I was on holiday, and I my website goes down whilst I'm on the beach. I could run to the nearest cafe and get hooked up to their Public Wifi and connect to my server to try see what's going on. Problem is, public internet access is unsecure, and risk people intercepting what you're looking at your server. For this reason, you'll use a VPN tool/software to connect to your server with additional privacy/ security measures. At that point, you can be reassured that you are accessing your server privately and
security from a remote location.

To be honest, as a standard practice, you should be using a secured private connection anyway...

VPS / VPN Differences

Hello,

The following are explanations of each term;

VPN :

• A VPN is essentially a private wifi network, but it is routed through another companies servers and proxies.
• Often used to bypass movie site blocks etc without using online proxy tools.
• Usally can not be activated in a work place or school due to network level restrictions.

VPS:

• A VPS is similar to a dedicated server, but instead it's a server with set resources, split into a handful of isolated accounts.
• Most types of websites can be hosted on them.
• VPN's can not be setup on a VPS, with the correct software.
• A VPS often comes with full root access.

I hope the above explanations help you understand the difference between the two.

VPN - WiFi Proxy to access blocked websites.
VPS - Cheap alternative to dedicated servers.

Thanks, don't forgot to leave a thumbs up or 'Thanks' if you, or anyone else finds this post helpful :)

What is VPS? It is called virtual private server. It is divided into fully separate systems using Virtuozzo. This system allocates memory, CPU, and disk space between a set number of users. Whereas a VPN is called virtual private network. With this, you can build your own or contact your internet provider for services to obtain a VPN. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to set up a VPN on the VPS accounts but you could on any of our dedicated servers.

VPN -
No matter whose network you're using to go online, if you want to maximize your privacy, making it much more difficult for others to monitor your online behavior, using a VPN (virtual private network) has become the best option even for casual web users.

When with the normal network, you used to browse anything on the internet, your unique IP address is used to get track and it is in un-encrypted form Every unique activity of your browsing can be track on the normal network.

VPN is used for privacy purpose. Your data will be encrypted when you used to access it using VPN. As data is used to access anonymously under VPN cloak so there are no chances of hacking of your data.

When you used to access the sensitive data like credit card details, account details, medical information etc that time it's necessary to have the security. VPN is the best option for such information sharing over the network.

VPS -
VPS is your own server with root access. You can host anything on it as it's your server. You can have any applications, software. You will have the bandwidth, resources, inode only for your service. You will get dedicated resources for your service on VPS. You can manage the server in your way.

Server will have good up-time and security measures if you will manage it from your end as there won't be interfere of other service. You will have root SSH access too.

So VPN and VPS re two independent things. The VPN is for privacy purpose ad VPS is the server where you can host the applications you want.
