In your personal opinion, when is the best use case for a VPS, rather than shared hosting, cloud hosting or a dedicated server? I and our team are hosting websites on different shared hosting accounts but VPS seem is a better option to host multi websites in a place.

There comes a point where the cost of having a shared hosting solution no longer becomes cost effective the more sites you start having on your hosting package.

As the more sites you have, you're going to need more resources. Adding these resources to your existing shared hosting plan may seem an easy solution, but a quick crunch of numbers you'll see that it doesn't work out in terms of costs anymore.

Moving to a VPS or Cloud is a good step without going too far with having a dedicated server and the associated costs. A good point to move to VPS in terms of websites is when performance and resources are needed and you've simply outgrown what your shared hosting offers. If you're looking to add more sites and looking to grow your website offering, going VPS is definitely the best way to go over a shared solution.

Either the above or your hosts kicks you off for using to much of there resources.

i would say if you hve more than 30-50 accounts would be a good idea to start thinking about moving to a new CPanel server or atleast VPS it.

You should move to VPS from a shared hosting account in the situation when

you have mutliple websites and want to consolidate their administration
heavy resources usages notices from shared hosting provider
when you need to have root access of the server in order to make some changes at server level in order to improve websites performance
many more .....

I don't believe having multiple sites is a good primary reason to use a VPS. You can host your multiple sites on a reseller account and they can be independently managed from a single login. Consider this before using a VPS -- also applies to dedi and so-called cloud servers -- for example:

  • You will need to provide your own server management (or pay someone)
  • In addition to web hosting, you will still need to manage email and other ancillary services
  • You will need to implement your own disaster recovery solution
  • You will need to keep the server secure -- an ongoing process

Currently, all these are handled for you by hosting provider. If your sites are suitable for a shared hosting environment and you are just looking for the convenience from consolidating your sites, I recommend a reseller account. BTW, you don't have to be a reseller to take advantage of that.

Well, As per my experience so far,
If client has custom requirements | high traffic, you better keep them on your own server.
Our clients like to play with different scripts* always need to install or enable function for them! some function may not fit in 'reseller package'.

So, From the beginning, we used own servers to deploy shared hosting!
In my opinion, Decision depends on type of clients you have!

If your problem is managing multiple sites on multiple shared hosting accounts, you and your team should consider getting a reseller. That way each site can have its own account on the same server setup.

If you're looking for more control though, a VPS is usually a great way to start. Depends on the use-case really, you haven't mentioned what work you do with these sites (if you work on front-end design or make the back-end too, traffic requirements, etc.)

I need a website! --> Shared Hosting
I want to build an ecommerce/blog/portfolio in there --> Shared Hosting
Now i have 30 sites in 15 different shared hosting accounts --> Consolidate with reseller shared hosting
Oh no i've got 10k concurrent visitors in one of the website but the rests are fine --> Migrate one site to its own VPS
I just remembered i can't manage a server --> Managed VPS

From my experience there's a lot of people that migrate to VPS when their site with proper tuning should be fine on a shared hosting. The recent rise of popularity of VPS doesn't just have to do with cheaper instances and finer admin control but due to the rise of modern CMS, and the huge amount of badly-written plugins that went haywire in shared hosting environment. :)

Please don't expect same performance for an OpenVZ VPS compared with a powerful shared hosting dedicated server. But if you really need full freedom on your websites files/folders and unlimited customization options then go with a KVM or OpenVZ VPS.

In my opinion you can upgrade from shared to vps anytime. The only time I would suggest is wait till your website gets more traffic and then once you succeed with the process then switch to VPS for more security and control. VPS is little higher price than shared hosting.

Its a preference of taste, tech-savy individuals will prefer a VPS cause they feel in full control of their website hosting environment, not to mentioned the flexibilty to install or remove any software. If you are hosting some sort of community like for example forumweb or any other legit website which would require more than 150-250 emails to be sent per hour. I know this might sound odd, however some people don't like cPanel or plesk, therefore they wish to have other control panels like VestaCP or CentOS WP.
Comparing different virtualization types for webhosting is quite pointless, OpenVZ, Xen or KVM, at the end of the day if the provider doesn't oversell their server nodes or performed a proper optimization to the nodes they will all have similar performance benchmarks.

Well hosting multiple websites on shared servers is not mostly recommended. I always demotivate this thing. What you should do get a dedicated VPS or cloud server if you can manage it. You need to have technical linux background for this. But if you can't manage the server get a managed hosting solution like Cloudways and Kinsta etc. Host your websites there and feel relax for your server configurations. Dedicated VPS always helps you to fasten your website and provide you continuous uptime.

I guess when you are confident enough to manage it yourself or seek a hosting that manages it for you, vps unlike a reseller or normal hosting needs to be setup completely from ground zero, it is just like a dedicated server in terms of flexibility and functionality, but usually with less specs and SOME resources such as disk IOPS or Network port might be shared !...

always good to upgrade to vps as you will have more power and efficiency for yourself. but switch at the right time. you might not need so much resources or if you feel you soon will then switch already.
