Hello Everyone,

Currently i am on mybb forum, just started but its so difficult to get one thing right by plugins and forum community isn't so active. Would anyone recommend me phpbb, bbpress, SMF or flarum instead?

Cause i am running this forum in subfolder of wordpress installation & will be moving soon to unmanaged vps. So what would be the better option?
Thanks.

Based on what you want to do and assuming that you want a free option for a forum then it might be better to do a bbPress or BuddyPress Wordpress plugin although you would be going down in forum quality since you would be moving from a dedicated forum software for the forum part of the site.

myBB is IMO better than any of the others listed as a forum software though and I personally would use it if I was trying to do the same thing.

If you want to go paid then you can go with XenForo and a Wordpress bridge.

There are some similar threads like your questions and already answered on this forum.

Check them out

If I am not wrong, phpbb, bbpress, SMF or flarum are free forum software and you have issues when using them, better is go with a paid forum cms as Xenforo, IPB or vBulletin.

forum community isn't so active
You need to provide to your visitors with useful posts, that will keep them stay longer on the forum and join for discussions.
Try to apply SEO for your forum, because its traffic source is very stable and you can get it daily without spending more money into marketing or ads on high traffic site.

If you are hosting your forum on a shared hosting then moving to a Managed VPS or an unmanaged VPS is a great choice and it will help your forum improve on performance aspect.

Hope that helped.

When i said forum isn't active, i meant by the mybb support community. even mybb 2.0 is coming soon from so long now.

Would you able to suggest digital ocean vps 1gb ram plan is enough for single wordpress & mybb installation?? also the unmanged vps installation is manageable for basic user??

It seems pretty active and there are lots of recent posts. I did notice that one of the mods was not too friendly IMO.

It is enough but it is very slow if you need speed for your site or community.
There are many good providers here https://forumweb.hosting/131-vps-hosting-offers
You can choose one, I chose one there and using for some websites.
If you don't have more experience on managing a VPS, you should choose a managed VPS service to get helped from your provider, they will optimize your VPS run faster with this budget.

which one are you using? I am currently looking in OVH plans but there support isn't great. I am also thinking to get some cheap VPS for a month or two, try some installations on them by myself before moving there any VPS service permanently.

At the VPS offer link i saw many unknown services so i doubt about there support.

Obviously you didn't have good experience on managing a VPS or a dedicated that will be more difficult when you manage an unmanaged VPS from OVH because they are unmanaged hosting service and their support is low.

If you doubt about their support, you can ask them to check or try their service for a month, some are offering money back guarantee for their hosting services.

With your budget, you can go with a resller plan or a small VPS but make sure that you will need a free hosting control panel because your budget is very small which can not pay for a paid hosting panel as cPanel.

For CMS I only know of three of them. For fast posting and you do not need a ton of other function I would recommended Wordpress. I setup a fully functional Wordpress site in like a day. For something that need a little bit more configuration you can go with Joomla. They have more support on features and their plugin install security is a bit more tight. The very hard one to use is Modx however it is the most secure CMS platform. You can actually have the core folder outside of your web root directory and change the admin login folder to something very right at the start. However Modx is not that simple to setup and they do not have a giant addon library.

Last year when I was thinking about using them again I could never find any good styles that I liked. Do you have any kind of source for any good and modern looking ones?

Well the styles are kinda hard to find decent ones for PHPbb but they have been getting better this is one of my personal sites,
http://forum.obliteratingwave.co.uk

That was one of the things that kind of put me off of using them. I was looking for one with a sidebar kind of like XenForo but couldn't hardly find anything that I could use and modify to look good. Plus I was looking for something more modern with the layouts.

I do have to admit that I didn't look around as much as I should have. :(

If you are using Wordpress, your natural choice is bbPress. bbPress is developed by the very same people who developed Wordpress. When it started, it was quite bare. Now it has a lot of bells and whistles. Another plus factor is the support you get from the Wordpress community.

Before you make a final decision, always look at what the user community is like. Always assume that things will go wrong. If you find a user community that answers every question by referring to a paid service, then you should think twice or even three times about using that software.
