I will not say VestaCP is better because before the version released few weeks ago, there was no update since the Nov 25, 2016.

Both of them have interesting features :

CWP : http://centos-webpanel.com/features

Vesta : https://vestacp.com/features/

But there still exist a huge difference between them and paid control panels like Plesk or cPanel :

- No regular updates
- Only community support with forums
- No Knowledgebase or only few articles

So, in my opinion, if you don't want to pay for a control panel, just read few tutorials about LAMP/LEMP setup and install your server with yourself.
Because, to use VestaCP or CWP, you will have to understand the structure and to read the documentation.
Each time you will not find how to perform something, you will have to look on the forum or to create a thread to ask your question.

To save few dollars, you will probably lost a lot of hours. For me, it will cost you more than a Plesk license.

I don't like free control panels due to the history of exploits on CWP, VestaCP hasn't had any issues that I'm aware of but if you have to chose between both I'd say CentosWebPanel.

I am in the same boat with you, I don't like free hosting control panels, because it lacks of features and supports. Nowadays, we can get paid hosting panels as Plesk or Directadmin with cheap prices, just a few dollars monthly.

I will say Centos Web panel has tried to replicate most of the cpanel look alike features . I am not sure about the security level issues which is there for both of these. But I will always suggest to legacy ones like Webmin/Virtualmin which is Ok for a shared hosting as well with some customizations and some limitations. They have been in the business / hosting industry for many years and they are still there. In the end we all will be looking for some updates on the security issues which will arise on a daily manner.
