Differences Between KVM and OpenVZ
First of all, the most basic difference between OpenVZ and KVM is that OpenVZ can ONLY host Linux operating systems, while KVM is more flexible and can host Linux, Windows, and custom OS options.

I recommend you to use KVM If you are start selling VPS Servers !

Many customer look for KVM or XEN VPS as it provides dedicated resources, vs shared resources with OpenVZ

To keep it short and simple : XEN. WHY? Because it provides actual dedicated resources, can be backed up by Idera and other backup software, and is a generally more stable depending on what you're using it for.

OpenVZ can have pretty good performance for website hosted on Linux.
But if you need comparison between then you got answer from others.

I just wonder if OpenVZ is made to be dedicated is he still shared?

Good morning,

Many provider sell OpenVZ because it uses shared resources so they can reduce service pricing. But with KVM, you get a full virtualization on a separated environment (OpenVZ virtual computers shares kernel with the physical host).

So, KVM is for performance, OpenVZ is for cheap services. You can try also Proxmox, OpenStack (OVH uses it), ... which are very similar to KVM.

If you have big performance on your OpenVZ physical host and you can balance load between VPS (for example, don't allow a certain big load average more than 2 hours), you can go with.

criteria for end user selection is easy for me

If i need to use custom linux kernels, tweak TCP settings and require using IPSET with CSF Firewall/Iptables, then KVM vps is needed as OpenVZ can't do that.

Going for KVM based VPS since there are more dedicated resources that are allocated to the container but some of the web hosts oversell. But if one is looking for something more economical then OpenVZ based VPS are usually less priced than KVM.

OpenVZ - Share kernel with host server. It is container based VPS . Your data can be view by host server . Resource are shared basis.

KVM - Is like mini dedicated server. You have full control , upgrade kernel, install other OS like windows there . Information more secure. Resources more dedicated except host server over sell.

I personally like OpenVZ for all my personal projects, mainly because of the low-overhead. That being said if you need to load custom kernel modules (like if the host doesn't allow PPTP and you are trying to VPN) then you are SOL.

Quite honestly, most my VPS instances are fairly stock LAMP stacks running various versions of CentOS and so I've only rarely had the VPN/Kernel Module issue with a few hosts. And every time this issue cropped up I was able to contact support and get them to enable PPTP/VPN for me.

Don't use Open VZ. KVM VPS is powerful more than Open VZ. as eg: If you are going to install cloud linux. you may need to buy KVM VPS. otherwise if you buy OpenVZ, Virtuzzo etc.. You may need to contact cloudlinux help and hosting provider and you will waste more time and money with that. like that. i'm mentioned about practical problem will you experience :)

OpenVZ: Good for overselling everything, CPU, RAM, Disk but bad for customers.
KVM: RAM or Disk can be oversold but better than OpenVZ in term of security, stability and features.

Xen: Hard to oversell, Stable and fully secure. Isolated environment for VPS. I think this is best for customer and bad for VPS providers ;)

To end it short, KVM All the way. there are almost less to no drawbacks to using KVM, there are significant performance increase and development just keeps getting better and better with KVM. try it for yourself

I run into weird issues with OpenVZ based servers, started changing most of my servers to KVM based ones back in December.

It's nice knowing the resources are always their when I need them too.
