Does using .ORG for any domain names is good for a website? today I check a domain and it is taken and I am moving to another way by applying for the .ORG as an alternative. What are your thoughts?

What type of website is this going to be? Traditionally .orgs were used for organizations (specifically no profits), however there are not set guidelines or rules behind when to use a .org

A .org domain can be good for some purposes and it will depend on what exactly you are going to put for the website on that domain and what it's purpose is.

Usually a .org domain is for non-profit type websites, informational type websites or other uses that are not commercial. Not that a .org can't be used for anything, it just might look weird to some site visitors if it's not used for it's usually purposes. ;)

Used to be mainly used for non profit organizations. I don't think there is any restriction for this though, I've never had to do any special requirements when purchasing this tld for any customers.

I would suggest though if you were looking for a .com then maybe try .net or .info or any of the newly created tlds like .rocks .lawyer etc. based on what your business is.

Domain .org isn't bad extension, as all above mention .org is meant to be for organization, but no one will ask you for proof that you are use it for organization.
If you have any other alternative extension for domain it would be better then use .org.
Question is what kind of website you want to have and what niche, maybe there is much better solution then .com .net

.ORG Domain Names are frequently used for organizations, generally used to inspired trust since organizations such as non-profit organizations can be identified as an official group rather than a standard website looking for donations.

Depends on what you need it for and the type of impression you wish to have. if the website is for an organisation then .Org is a great extension to use.

Best of luck!

I think .ORG should only be used for non-profit websites. It looks out of place on a commercial website. Nonetheless, there was a myth around in the past that only .com, .net, and .org were ranked the best. Does anyone still believe it?

Very true and I could not agree more! :thumb:

No, Google has stated that the do not take the domain extension into consideration. Only the country code extensions have a ranking improvement and it's just for the local search results for the country that the extension is for.

Yeah, but some people on a another forum noted that the .US domain is often seen by Americans as the word "us" rather than as the United States.:)

Yeah, I have seen posts around the web of people that think .us is a regular TLD. You can still use it as such but you'd only possibly get a slight rankings bump in the US searches.

It's supposed to be reserved for basically US citizens or businesses that operate or have interests in the US but I have seen them registered by people around the world.

That is actually quite a common misconception that I have seen in the domain circles as well as on some forums.

I don't really know but these days with more of the fancy domain extensions and most of the new extension being generic in use I would think that the amount that see is as an American domain extension is less than what it probably was several years ago.

@Terrance, I will go with @thehostingexpert but I don't mind using any domain extensions if I see it has benefits or potential to develop a new website. All depend on plans and analytics.

If FWH ends up ranking better than WHT then we can say it's a myth. :p
:D You can not compare a site with 10 months old and a site (WHT) 17 years old and it was built in the greatest time for forums, when WHT appeared, social networks are not really popuplar, as Facebook was just 3 years old in that time and everyone was using forums as the best source for discussing and sharing information.

If WHT uses a domain 10 months old like this and only uses 47K posts as our forum then why we don't think that we can defeat them.

Yes, I'm aware of all that @fwh, and I agree! I did use :p for a reason :good:

I don't see why a .com would rank more than say .hosting, but business is business, and if Google has stats and knows they make more in ads by ranking commercial websites better in SERPs then you could see why a .com would rank better over say a .org. Only Google knows the real answer to that. I don't think it's the case, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out either.

Even if you don't have a .com or .net and have an industry type TLD like .hosting then the branding, etc should pretty much get you the same results. The only issue is those new to internet/hosting may go to yourdomain.com rather than yourdomain.cool and could lead to lost sales because of it. But I think users nowadays are more clued up and don't assume all websites end in .com or net anymore.

Yes .com is better because it is popular and has many advantages over other domain extensions. Let's try to imagine, when I promote a domain like forumweb.hosting to a person, if they didn't know .hosting extension is existed then they can consider and thinking it is a valid domain/website? can I visit it?
But for the case is .com they can click and visiting without thinking more about that hence why I said .com is better. Even for a new user to the internet, they only knows .com without knowing more about other domain extensions.

Yes as said above, it should be better if this goes with .com in the case they don't know about that domain extension is existed but if they knew then that is not a problem.
For example, you have youareso.com and youareso.cool then which one is better?
or forumweb. com and forumweb.hosting then which one is better? :D why?

It is depended on what your website is about, however it is a good domain and is just like .com, or .net. But also depends on what you are hosting on it.

Hello,
Yes it is a good option for domain extension but it purely depends that which type of website you are going to launch .
In a practical way .org is used for sites oh any organisation.

It is a top level domain and also depends on the type of model you are looking to run using that extension. But, definitely SEO wise it shouldn't be an issue.

If it's for your hosting brand, I'd avoid registering a .org domain, unless you have some kind of charity connection where you're donating parts of your profit to charity every month and it's a huge part of your brand's message.

I think dot org is reserved for the organizations with non profit. If you are using dot org for the websites with commercial value, it is not ethical. Googke gives more importance to dot org compared to dot com. That's why google always shows wikipedia at the top. It is not right to use dot org if you intend to monetize your website with ads.
