There are few websites out there that provides templates that you could modify on your own. It's not a bad thing to use a template but in that case your web design would look like generic. A customized web design is always preferable to create identity and individuality. It's good to have a catchy web design which would be easily recognizable as your own. That would take you apart from the others and future competitions. I think its best to stand out in we design.

I've got some templates for free, and then I just changed to my needs, take something from one template and put it on another one.
Then I started to learn foundation, and build my site from scratch.

Did you custom design your site or use a template? I would love to get a custom designed site but will have to wait until I make some money. Just curious what others feel about this.
Hi Energized it,

In designing your website, you must think of your budget first. If you have the money to hire someone to do an excellent design then I suggest that you let them do their expertise and let them know what you expect with the concept of their design. But, as what you've mentioned, You still don't have the budget for it... So I suggest that you use a template first, besides its all in the content of the website, not the design.... Another one would be studying / researching about HTML or doing your own site since it would be cheaper.

There are many free template online and you can use it to your website or whatever is that thing your doing right now. You can use it then you will then custom designed it. In that way, you will have a less thing to make your website more stunning than the default interface of the template.

Use a template. When our team made a website, we use template to design our site because using template can fit into the proper site of your web site. Also because of the Template you can properly align the design to where you want it to be.

Custom made sites are only expensive if you don't build them yourself! It's a valuable skill to have and you can find plenty of great resources to help you. If you're not up to creating a site from scratch you can use a template(like others have already suggested) and then tinker with it till you have something new.

Do you use a CMS? If you learn how to use a CMS and do some coding then you can create a "custom looking" site with much less effort. Some people use a CMS without learning the basics of website design. That in my opinion is a huge fault as you'll inevitably have to get yourself out of minor problems and wouldn't want a dull looking site.

In my opinion, most developers are not able to replicate the quality of good templates. So the best option is buying one and using it as a base to modify it to your needs.

So I hired a freelancer to work on my webpage, and it works well. The finish looks great, and I easy to navigate. I hired them from another country, so I was able to get it done around $150 for 10 pages. I ended up asked him to make some modification on the website, and he only charged $20. There is some serious skillful freelancer outside the US for cheap, so I would definitely look into that.
