I had searched and read various varying articles on the net. Personally I always go with 1:1024. What is the actual ratio? 1:1024 or 1:1000? Does any correct this for me?

Most people would use 1000 for easier math, but technically it is 1024.

Computers use bits.
There are 8 bits in a byte

Therefore anything measures in bytes (KB, MB, GB, TB) will be a multiple of 8.

Well if we are talking about resource allocation it varies upon providers since the hosting business is a world with its own terminology.
Otherwise RDO Servers explained it pretty well.

1GB is 1024MB but if you are buying a 10GB plan you are getting 10GB and not 10 x 1024MB. :)

As all said before me 1000 or 1k in standard system is 1024 in computer system.

Why is that because one bit can be 0 or 1, (included and not) to get value of next bit you have do math 2(possible state) [SUP]bit position[/SUP] like 2[SUP]10[/SUP] is 1024. that is closest number to 1000.

2[SUP]9[/SUP]=512
2[SUP]11[/SUP]=2048

so if you see some where 1000MB it isn't 1TB it is 1000/1024~0.9766TB
