Why is Linux considered more secure than Windows in web hosting field? Is there any things to proves this? I have come to believe that Linux has been safer so far but I could not point out why. Now as we have Windows 10, is Linux still better in security?

The most portant thing to remember is that a server is only as secure as you make it.

No OS is 'secure' when you install it. The is a process to go through the to harden a server and protect it from attack.

A couple months ago we have several dedicated server customers running Linux that got hit with the 0 day Dirty Cow vulnerability. These servers typically used a combined 200Mbps of bandwidth, but all of a sudden they were using 2.5 Gbps of bandwidth.

Having security protocols in place, constant monitoring, and a proficient support team is what makes the difference as we were able to mitigate this and patch the servers in a few hours with no ill effects to any customers.

Moral of the story, if it is connected to the internet, it's is not 'secure' and there will be problems. You have to plan for these and know what your going to do, or who your going to turn to when there are problems.

I would say Linux is considered more secure due to it's open source nature (with most distributions) When something is open source their is an army of highly skilled people looking over the code of common programs such as MySQL and Apache along with networking/security programs and the kernel down to the binary level.

Sure Microsoft has all the money in the world but I don't think even that can out class the thousands of people working on Linux code every day.
With a product that is owned you have to wait for the manufacturer to fix the problem compared to a whole community working on a problem and actively looking for new issues daily.

But as others have said at the user level/application layer all this security work can be undone with a easy to guess password regardless of platform.

Anyway that's my 2 cents

I would say Linux is more secure. Windows has always been a huge target for attackers since it is the most used OS in the world. Linux doesn't have nearly the install base.

I agree with others here too though in that any OS is only as secure as you make it.
