I know the Xeon processors have been around for a long time and are mostly used in dedicated servers, but I am curious about the best desktop processor out there now is the Intel Core i7 line. The i7's and Xeons are both quad-core processors, So what is the difference between them? which is better?

In my opinion the best for gaming is Intel i7-6700K overclocked.

For a desktop, XEON are useless because you will never use their features.
XEON CPU are build for hosting, for example the E5 series are for virtualization, but for a desktop you will just pay a CPU very expensive.

Xeon is made for server purpose and i7 is powerful desktop CPU.
i7 can handle more demanding software and games that need fast multi-core CPU, RAM and multiple graphics cards.
Extreme version can have 10cores/20threads and support up to 128GB RAM DDR4 2400/2133.
While Xeon is made for 24/7 work, virtualization, can support multiple CPUs and some of them can support up to 3TB RAM and have more cores per CPU up to 24cores/48threads.
If you have some specific CPUs to compare you can search to see if someone have compared these two CPUs.

I think this thread has been pretty much answered, they are just built for different things. Xeon is a server CPU and the intel i series are better suited to personal computing, gaming and workstations. You might see similar performance in a desktop environment with either but when you start to use virtualization and requires a lot of cores you will see why Xeon's are the obvious choice. I seen the subject talked about much over the years I've had a lot of people agree that Xeon are manufactured a little different to provide more steady long term performance whilst the intel i range is built balanced more on the performance side.

Yes, the OP's question has been answered perfectly many times over.

Also, remember it isn't just whether the processor is i3, i5 or i7 but to do with the generation of the processor too.
