A host provider suggested me these

I would recommend checking out VPSs rather than Dedicated servers.

VPSs are reliable, more flexible, and can scale up or down easily. A dedicated server stays still.
is it true? can not I change specs/plans if I am hosting on a dedicated server?

In terms of reliability and to allow for growth a VPS is best so yes it is true.
You can upgrade a dedicated just like any other server but a VPS you flexibility to upgrade/downgrade easier.

dedicated servers can be customized during the order process but rarely later.
VPS are more than flexible, and the main reason to choose a dedicated server is the ability to create VPS

right , you can host VPS on a dedicated servers but you can host a VPS on a VPS. Its a process cycle actually. when you have a few sites a VPS is the good platform for hosting those websites when you grow with number of websites and need of resources you have to upgrade to the dedicated server.

You get a dedicated server with specific specifications when you order it but you can changes the specs if you need to. Depending on the company your with and how advanced you are with transferring data and what not. Its not hard for a provider to change the CPU or drives in your server if need be. In terms of reliability a vps is a dedicated server broken down and yes you can scale up a vps but eventually your going to outgrow the VPS and need a dedi, so yes flexible to a certain extent.

As all before me says it is easier to change specs/plans on VPS then dedi.
Why? simple VPS is software based server so you can easy change spec. In other hand dedi have hardware config so you can replace with better one but you need to transfer all data from one to another or you can upgrade RAM.
But if you need more space and want more disks or disks with more capacity you need to transfer data or reconfigure RAID.

If I'm wrong please correct me.

Yes and no, sort of, kind of, to some extent.

I think "to some extent" is the best answer. To some extent a VPS is better than a Dedicated Server, but at some point, you MAY need a dedicated server. But 9/10 sites never need a dedicated server, and I would say many individuals and business owners overpay for dedicated servers by large amounts when they could have saved a lot more by using a VPS and still have their websites loading blazing fast if not faster in some cases.

I will say you usually get better value for money with a VPS.

If a website really need a dedicated server to load properly, there is a huge problem. And if it really need so much resources, a cloud hosting solution like AWS or Google Cloud will be more expensive but also more stable.
When a dedicated server crash, there is no way to migrate it quickly elsewhere or to add more resources.

I doubt this because there are many dedicated providers out there and they are still offing kind of this server, if they don't have clients, how they will manage and maintaining their servers. Definitely they are used for big sites though and more people are still needing them.

You are right if you have a software or as you say big websites that consume lots of server resource for sure you will need a bare-metal server, the server resources are yours to use at maximum but to upgrade servers there are some drawbacks in the other hand VPS are easy to upgrade but you share the server resources with other VPSs tenants

I know, but if I ask to a provider what I need to host my WordPress website, 7/10 will answer a dedicated server. :chair:

Yes it's true. The reason is pretty simple.

Dedicated servers are physical machines which means if you need to upgrade or downgrade, someone literally has to go to the cabinet, shut it down(not required for hot swappable devices), pull out the server from the rack, Add or remove hardware. This not only adds to Maintenance tech charges and time but your server will essentially be down during this time. If something fails, the fastest response I have seen is 4 hours. This is the minimum time it takes for them to identify what has failed, do the replacement and bring it back online. Maximum times can be as horrible as 1 or 2 days if the failed part is not immediately available.

A VPS on the other hand as the name suggest is a virtual server which mean no one has to go anywhere or touch anything physically to upgrade or downgrade your server. Just a few click of a buttons and you have more RAM, more CPU, more disk etc. Even if something fails, you can easily use your backed up server image and instantly spin up another VPS in no time. This is why a VPS is much more flexible

VPS are definitely more flexible

Now regarding reliability it depends how good is your VPS host, whether they use RAID, their VPS Node config etc...

With dedicated server it all depends upon how you configure and manage it, but with VPS it depends upon how you manage it + your VPS Hosting company

VPS are usually cheaper then dedicated servers

Actually your host did not say VPS is more reliable as title says -- if your quote in post is correct. How can it be since a VPS is installed onto a dedicated server? However it is more flexible, especially if you do not need the full power of a dedicated yet, but may in future.

Like everyone above VPS are more flexible than dedicated server how ever they are put into a pool by the hosting provider which depending on setups run on a number of dedicated server.

If you want truly full control over how well the VPS preforms a dedicated server with VPS OS like VMware give you total control over how your VPS performance and if you want to upgrade your system you can with little down time.

Dedicated server can be built to be just as robost than VPS in current cases but depending on setup the dedicated server will be limited to CPU/Ram upgrades if your using RAID then upgrading the hard drives becomes more of an issues.
