I had a look at VPS offer section and there has so many VPS offers with good price, specs, features they are making me confused on choosing a good one. Can you guys here share me any tips how to choose a good VPS hosting company? What should I consider when choosing a VPS plan?

Hi Paparazzi,

What spec you need depends on your requirements and if you want the server to be managed or not.
Some providers have dedicated resources and some have shared, also some VPS are what is know as cloud which will give you almost 100% failure protection whilst others are powered by a single piece of hardware. I agree buying a VPS can be confusing with the endless offers and different type of products.

I can't really advise more without knowing what you plan to use the VPS for ?

Hi Paparazzi,

I think some of the most important factors are uptime, quality of support, location and the technical specifications of the hardware powering your VPS. If you require management, whether they provide management or not may be a deal breaker.

There are additional factors to consider as well such as the cost of addons such as a static IP.

Number one with any hosting company should be support. How fast do they respond, can they actually fix your issues. It doesn't matter how good the actual hosting is if you can never contact someone when you have an issue. Saying, that, second would be hardware and speed of connection.

Consider the specs and also look to see if they are managed or unmanaged by that I mean not with cPanel but I mean providing help for problems and such things. If you are not a techy person be sure to look for a managed provider so you can get help with problems and things like that and last but no least look for pricing usually if its to good to be true its not a good deal. The cheaper the product the less support you will get (not always true) and they usually do not have a SLA guarantee (not always true) but everything has there own though's on how to choose a provider. Myself if I don't see an SLA its a no go and if I don't see stability its a no go.

In short, and going by your questions, it sounds to me like you need an affordable fully managed VPS (with cPanel included) from a reputable provider with great specs and features. Personally, I like the ones where it does everything it says on the tin, and I don't have to keep contacting the hosting provider every hour with things like "my server is down", "the server is slow" etc. I like it when the service "just works". We are too busy these days. If you can relate to that, then I advise choosing a provider who's been around for quite some time, and I say that, because even though we've been running for seven years, there's always something new to learn. That is what I love about technology/computers/internet. Thinking back to what I knew back when I started and what I know is just "wow". Long story short, it's important to use a hosting provider who knows what they're doing, or they at least hire someone who does!

You might not want to be choosing a provider who's only been running for a year or so and is still learning the ropes if server uptime is critical for your website. Not so much an issue if while the provider is new, they have experience or the hosting is for hobby sites, but if your site is important e.g., bringing in Sales then I recommend paying a good price and using an established provider.

At the end of the day, no provider can guarantee 100% uptime indefinitely. Things go wrong, etc. and no amount of "Cloud" can help 100%. The trick is to find a provider who has a good history to ensure you receive the best service overall.

Please let us know the kind of website you would like to run? VPS/Dedicated Server isn't the bee all and end all. You can get just as good a service from a standard Web Hosting account when using a reputable provider.

To echo energizedit support is #1. If you run into an issue, they might have a really huge line of servers and networks but those are no good if there isn't anyone on the other end of the phone to help out. Also, I can't stress this enough, don't believe every company that promises prompt response times and 24/7 support. Everyone claims 24/7 support because it is the only way to remain competitive in this industry. If you have narrowed down a list of hosts, send them a ticket or email introducing yourself and ask some questions. See how long it takes to get a response. Actions speak louder than words. Good luck and happy holidays!

The first and most obvious decision you will want to make is figuring out whether or not you will need a Managed or Unmanaged Solution. By default, you will find that most VPS plans are unmanaged. If you are not familiar with how to manage a server, you will want to exclusively look at Managed Services.

Based on your premise of making this post. I am going to assume you will want to look at Fully Managed Services.

With that being said, are you sure you need a VPS to begin with?

As a normal user, managed service is always my first choice.

A static IP? What is it? Do I need to use it if I choose a vps plan?

I am using cPanel on my shared hosting, it is possible to archive this on a VPS?

Of course I need a VPS, using shared hosting and get suspended any time. I suppose VPS has better resource.

You can not know they are real or fake reviews on review sites unless you know someone used it and share you which you need to know about a web provider that you're going to buy their plans.

I would have a pretty narrow list when choosing VPS.

1) What am I going to use it for?
2) Does the provider have all the resources needed for my business?
3) Are the packages with resources needed, in my budget?
4) Does the package come with support?

Other than this, it's all technical things that one needs to look into.. which most of us do when we visit a provider.. :D

I wrote a good guide on what to look for in a host when you're out looking for one, might look a bit spammy if I try to post a link now since I just signed up though.

Basic things you wanna look at before you buy from somebody are -

Price

WhoIS (is it private or not?)

How many reviews do they have publically available, not on their own website. Do they look real or are they just bots?

Read the TOS and AUP

If they're active on forums is a plus for me personally.

If they're a registered business or not.

Those are a few things to lookout for.
