I think it's best to host your own website as you have access to your own files. With most website builders you're kind of locked into their system.

We offer SiteMush which is a combination of Wix and WordPress.

SiteMush is still in BETA, but Softaculous have done a good job of it so far. No doubt many more providers will switch from the likes of RVSiteBuilder to SiteMush soon.

I would recommend self-hosted wordpress, because have more options for customizing. Also ranking is way better on self-hosted blog.
Both have limitations wix have 500MB space and 1GB bandwidth, WP have 3GB Storage Space.
Paid versions from 8,5$ (wix) 2,9$(WP) have ads free content and from 8,5$(wp) you can monetize your blog or website.
For $8,5/mo you can have good shared hosting for your self-hosted blog.

I don't know for any popular blog hosted on wordpress.com or wix.com, but there are lot's of self-hosted WordPress like viral sites, computer hardware reviews etc.
I saw some blogger/blogspot blogs that are well ranked (maybe because its g service).

If you just want to have blog, then go with any kind blogging service. For more professional and earning blog get self-hosted.

We used Wix way back when for a project and didn't like it at all. We build all of our sites now with Wordpress

I agree with you and only use free Wordpress blogs for small sites or doing them as webs 2.0

We used Wix way back when for a project and didn't like it at all. We build all of our sites now with Wordpress
Wix is really very slow and even I could not open a web page with it. Wordpress is always a great choice, especially if you can host it on a VPS hosting. It will give you the best performance.

Self hosting is always the better option, if you are not completly satisfied with the offered service you can always pack your stuff and leave, besides that it gives you full control over the software and allocated resources.

I wouldn't host on Wix or Wordpress.com, unless it was a personal blog and I wasn't interested in making money. For the price of hosting, it's worth it to self-host, especially using WordPress.

As other has mentioned, self hosting wordpress is the way to go. You may start out on wix or managed wordpress, but soon you'll quickly want more flexibility out of it. It not hard to implement a self hosted wordpress site - just a bit of reading up and tutorials. Nonetheless, the long term benefits outstrip this. Give it a shot and you'll never look back.

If I had to choose between Wix or Wordpress I would definitely choose Wordpress. I have tried to use Wix a couple times in the past years for side projects but no matter what they just came off looking cheap.

Of course a self-hosted Wordpress website would be much better and give you a lot more flexibility and a vast amount of themes and plugins that you can use. At the prices that you can get a cheap web hosting service for these days it just makes better sense to use a self-hosted version of WP since it's only going to cost a few dollars a month.

All good answers above. Only one seem to mention being locked into Wix's system.

With any website builder, as easy as it may seem, once you decide to move to another host, or upgrade your website...the website built in the builder is stuck in the builder. I've seen cases where people built a website for their business, and had to scrape it once it was time to move to something better. Fortunately they were still able to do some cut and pasting. Years ago, builders were all Flash based, which meant no cutting and pasting of anything, and starting from the beginning.

Both Wix and WordPress allow you to create websites without learning to code.
The basic website builder in Wix is free, Wix comes with more than 500+ pre-made templates to choose from.
There are thousands of free and paid themes available for WordPress, free themes come with limited support, but they also go through a strict review process. Paid themes generally offer more features and come with premium support options.
I would recommend WordPress.

Wix:pros:

Easy to use for non programmers
Easy to get your website online in less time, there are lots of templates to choose from
Easy to learn for non IT users
Easy to Integrate shopping cart software
and much more..

Verdict: Wix is for users, who want the satisfaction of DIY website builder and do not mine paying hefty prices for the same.

WordPress:
You own your data and your website
Self Hosted and easily extensible as your needs grow.
Thousands of themes, plugins and extensions to build almost any kind of websites.
Highly scalable, millions of users and support right on Google search.
Easy to learn, if you put some time aside.
You can get PCI compilant web store built using wordpress
and much more..

Verdict: WordPress is for someone who can put some time and efforts in learning this wonderful CMS. WordPress runs on cheap hosting, so its less costly when compared to wix.

At the end of the day, its depends on comfort level and requirements. For someone wordpress is better, for someone else its Wix. So the choice is yours, try both of them and see what fits your needs.

Hope this helps you, Thank you.

Instead of choosing Wordpress.com. Wordpress.org will give you a lot of freedom to edit your site unlike wordpress.com which is pretty limited in terms of features if you plan on building a blog.

Wix or wordpress as a freeblogging platform sucks. If you are a novice, do not have great expectations and want to have a website just for fun, free blogging platforms may be good, however, if you seriously want a website, you will have to choose a self hosted wordpress website. There are of course many other CMS, but wordpress is one of the best things you can have for free. Always go for wordpress.org, which is a open source CMS. All you need a domain and hosting to make your website live.

In wordpress, we can easy customize and install useful plugins related to technology rather than Wix. I would prefer wordpress because it is open-source CMS and offer many options.
