I have heard all the advice here people are recommending to go with a VPS instead of a sharing hosting. Is it exact? If I move to VPS it will give huge performance boost? I'm talking about 2Gb RAM VPS. Is there a way to compare to shared hosting performance?

It depends on your experiences with shared hosting now. If you are on a shared server that isnt "Crammed" with users, then the performance may be better than a 2GB VPS.

2GB of ram isn't that much when you look at how traffic is served by web services. If each apache or nginx process needs 10-20MB of RAM to run, and you get hit with 100 requests, the server will be very slow at responding (for example).

Ram is usually trivial in terms of VPS hosting costs, however disk space is usually what drives up the costs because disks are more expensive than ram.

Old thread I realize, but I think it is important to clarify something. VPS is only the better choice if the OP has the technical knowledge required to properly administrate the server. And depending on the upstream provider, server hardware, etc shared hosting could very well perform better than a low end VPS.

Vote for VPS, better than Shared, if you have a good budget, you can consider cloud or dedicated servers.

Yes vps is virtual private server which have own space in server which was get good speed and security as compared to shared hosting
Absolutely, I used shared hosting in the past but since I have known VPS, I have not come back with shared hosting any more.

Yes VPS is always a good choice but with 2 GB of RAM, you should go with LAMP or LEMP stack. Install a hosting control panel with this amount of RAM can not be enough for your system using.

Please specify what type of Virtualization your server use. If its KVM it can be due to many requests to database at the same time. You need to ask tech support to increase the number of limits.
If your VPS is on OpenVZ you or other clients on the server measure up limits so site responds slowly

I disagree with a lot of users here. Having a VPS is not necessarily better. Not if the user does not know how to run the VPS properly, configured, secured and performing well. I've had so many local clients who moved from VPS to shared hosting just because they couldn't make it perform well, not to mention that you see a lot of people with buggy WordPress plugins that slow the heck out of the site and cause high load.

Not at all, ever situation is going to be different. If your website does not need the extra resources, unless you are personally optimizing the VPS yourself. There is not going to be any performance benefits (might even be slower if the VPS is unmanaged and not properly optimized).

Ultimately, the answer to your question starts with your website and the answer is not going to be the same for every website.

I disagree with that "VPS is always better than shared". It depends on the customer's requirements, budget and expectations.

A Web Hosting account hosted on similar hardware to that of a VPS node and allowing let's say 2GB CPU + 2GB MEM under CloudLinux could outperform a VPS from a VPS provider who oversells/overloads their VPS nodes more. It can go either way. You need to choose a reputable proivder who manages their servers really well and offers the best value for money to get the best overall service.

It all depends on your plan and servers that hosts hosting and VPS.

I am using 2GB DigitalOcean Managed server at Cloudways and I love the performance of the website. Obviously Vps is far better then shared hosting hassles.

Think about it this way. Shared hosting server with 16 GB of RAM shared among 500 websites or VPS with 2 GB of RAM for only your website.

However, other VPS on the node may have an effect on the performance of your VPS.

VPS is good for large websites with lots of traffic. I would suggest a shared web host plan until you get a lot of traffic or are thinking about adding lots of things to your website.

Also, some VPS come with no settings or programs at all (i.e. cPanel) which could make setup in the long run way more expensive in the long run.

However, VPS is definitely the best option if you want full permissions for everything having to do with your website. It is also the most dependable.
