A managed vps (or managed services in general) is someone who manages your server for you. Usually they will manage everything with the server including OS configuration, security, update/patches and support requests for changes and whatnot.

The better managed service providers will be very proactive with good response times to support requests. There is obviously a premium to managed services. If you are comfortable managing a server yourself, it might not be necessary. However if you have a lot of servers or resources to manage, it might be worth it to not use all your time managing the servers yourself.

Hi Cheeraq,

With a managed server anything you want done to the server should be taken care of by the hosting provider.
If you have a server that is not managed it's up to you to take care of all server administration and the hosting provider will not help you, apart from resetting the VPS to a fresh install.

Key Differences In The Managed And Un-Managed Hosting Plans

When it comes to web hosting, think of server management as a planned support.

In case of a managed hosting package, the web hosting company offers free support for every problem or task and for the emergencies. Obviously there is a limit to this, for instance the web hosting company will not provide you with support for any coding problem on your blog. However, things like the control panel, operating system, server setup and the pre-installed applications are completely managed and supported. Often managed hosting also comes with backup system and monitoring.

Un-managed hosting is a cheaper hosting option because there is no management i.e. there is no routine support. The web hosting company will perform tasks like replacing the failed components, rebooting the servers, maintaining the network and keeping the lights on; however, it will not support any software or install any application for you. Un-managed hosting is completely your own hosting infrastructure that you have to maintain on your own. You will have to install the security packages, fix the weird error messages and you are responsible for installing everything apart from the OS.

the main differents is the level of support. About unmanaged VPS you should take care by yourself.
Managed VPS are for those who don`t want to spend time for doing configuration by themselves, or have not enough knowledge in administration. Company that offer managed VPS can install control panel, OS, and do variety configs that they include in this service.
You should better choose managed VPS they are not much expensive compared to unmanaged. And if you`ll have some issue your provide will be there to help you.

Managed VPS is where your web hosting provider will take care of all the server management tasks such as configuration, maintenance, software updates and etc. Different web-hosting providers will offer different supports. Some might cover all tasks whereas others can give priority to some certain sections.
Unmanaged is where you manage the VPS yourself. However, some of the tasks such as software updates and server configuration are covered by the provider.
If you have the expertise to manage an unmanaged VPS then you can go with Unmanaged but if you don't it would be a better choice to choose Managed VPS.
