Instead of updating the OS , its recommended that back up all your data and get the server reinstalled with CentOS 7. what control panel do you have running at the moment ?

Well ..

CentOS 6 can easily upgraded to CentOs 7 ofcourse with the course of some update commands , however its not recommended. The reason is mis match of RPMs , versions . so its better to get your data backed up on a secured location , reinstall the server and you are good to go.

In-place upgrade of operating systems like CentOS are not recommended at all as it is more likely to break things resulting in downtimes and loss of data. It is always recommended to setup another system with CentOS 7 and then migrate everything to the new box. This will prevent downtimes though migration may be a tedious task.

We have done it with lower 6 versions but I think the upgrade tool was officially depreciated with CentOS 6.7. So depends on your CentOS 6.x version.

Hi

I will always suggest to get a latest OS installed in a new server and get the contents migrated as I have seen many ending up in issues after such upgrade attempts in production servers. Atleast make sure you have all necessary backups so that you can restore accounts easily to a new server if any thing goes wrong. (Always expect some issues in such manual OS upgrades)

it's not recommended to do in place upgrades for centos 6 to 7 though centos 7 is first version to support it but there's limitations. Read https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/CentOSUpgradeTool

but centos don't recommend it if you use alot of 3rd party yum repos in centos 6 as it could break stuff

so as most folks have stated backup data and move to centos 7 server is safest :)
