Why not both if possible, I learn from forums by asking specific questions to web hosting experts or sharing my knowledge to people and get what I got right.
If you want to learn web hosting security, configurations then blogs and forum will work as well.
Just my 0.02 ¢!

Reading tutorials and books will give you theoretical knowledge , however if you really want to be the expert of the things you need to practice the things practially as things keeps changing and you will need to be updated accordingly.

Depending on what you already know about the subject, who will have a lot to learn.
I would suggest various books on different subjects such as Linux, DNS, Network Security, Web Servers, Email Servers, Control Panels to name a few.
I would also suggest you get yourself a VPS for learning and study, you can read all you like but nothing will prepare you for managing a production server than by doing it.Web Hosting | Reseller | VPS
30 Day Money Back Guarantee | cPanel | 365 Day UK Support | Free Trial

Read books to have a background on managing dedicated server then you can watch tutorials for clarification and proper usage. However, if you still have difficulties and questions that cannot be answered by those, you can ask for expert advice and instructions since they are the ones who had much background experience and expertise on the subject matter.

You will get number of videos as well tutorial online with very single step in detail. You will find answer for your every query online. Books are good , no doubt but those are not updated. Now a days everything is updating every day so it's better to go with online tutorials.
Hope this will help you.

You could easily hire a server management team, and ask them to teach you what steps they do when they configure your server. I've used Platinum Server Management before, and they did help me a lot in teaching basic configs, setting up firewalls and such.
However, I would really advise you to hire a server management company, if you have no experience prior, and/or if you intend to go LIVE/use the server for production. Because when shit happens, and hits the ceiling, it's best to have experts ( if you are not one yourself ) ready to go and repair yeh server !
If you use the online route, you could always get a cheap KVM server, for a couple of dollars a month, and keep playing with it !

Well go for tutorial. You learn more in actual basis, which is you can actually do what is tutor is saying. And tutoring you have a guidance whenever you were lost or don't understand what is in the book.

Do both its better to no more information than only half. Books sometimes hard to understand but if you read it you will have ideas so when you watch the tutorial it is more easier to understand so if possible try both.

If you have available resources on both the book or tutorial, why not use both? In a world of too much information available, it now all boils down to optimization and skills one can develop with the readily available information. Harbor all the resources you can use to develop yourself faster and smarter.

Watching step by step video tutorial is more preferable nowadays that reading it in a book. In books, you will need to comprehend your reading, make an understanding and apply your knowledge for a certain task. Why would you waste time on reading when you can just download a step by step video tutorial? You just need to follow what is in the tutorial and you will do it on-hand, you can see is directly. There are many tutorial videos nowadays, and it's easy to follow, so it's more convenient and efficient. Experience is the best teacher, and tutorial teaches you the actual thing.

In my opinion it would be best to have both. Reading would give you a more thorough background to what you need to learn. And then comes tutorial. So that in this phase you will able to apply the stored knowledge into actions and be able to appreciate them. What's best in tutorials is that you'll have a one on one communication with the teacher unlike the book in which if you have questions they can't be communicated. It's best to have the both worlds.

I think it is more practical to watch tutorials because you can see the actual thing or procedure and how it works. The instructions usually at tutorials are simplified and easy to follow unlike books which sometimes the words being used are too technical. You can also leave in the comment section of a tutorial session/video if you encounter problem or you have questions to ask. From there you can have conversation and exchange of ideas with the maker of tutorial and it's viewers.

You should do both for you to be 100% sure but for me tutorials are probably the best. You can find online tutorials in the internet and most of them are probably updated. They also give enough details in online tutorials and plus they're all updated.

Well it depends on person. For me, i learn quicky by watching tutorials. Books are also good but sometimes confusing, specially when the idea is different from other tutorial.

I prefer to go for a tutorials than reading books. You can find wide selection of video tutorials in the internet today. I use video tutorial after I finished my baking class to find more baking tips and tecniques, recipes and baking hacks.

Books and tutorial are same good to use to learn something new. It is depend on a situation like if you are on a place that there is no internet, then books are the best choice.

You will need both books and tutorials. Books will as your guide in your work and you can get ideas and other information from tutorials. So I think you should invest for good books and tutorials for best results.

I suggest you go tutorial with a book, better to have those two. The best way to learn is hands-on experience.
10-14-2017, 04:55 PM #21
You can learn in both of them. So its in you of which you prefer books are specific and knowledgeable you can learn more from reading it while tutorial is a one by one process it made you do things step by step.

I suggest that you try using the Youtube .There are tutorials on how to manage a dedicated server. For me, it is better than the book because in youtube tutorials, it is detailed. In case you are not contended with the video, you can choose another one. Somehow, it is advantageous to use tutorial in youtube because in just one click, you can learn for free. Books will let you spare a certain amount in order to have it. Good for you if you can only borrow it but the chance is quite slim.
11-14-2017, 12:34 PM #23
you must read books for preference and step by step procedures it is important to read first the advantage and disadvantage or pros and cons, then the safety precautions to start what you want to do then its easy to use the tutorials in the youtube for better understanding

Personally, I agree with you @24x7CSM that it can be both. Why? Simple because we as a human is not a robot to begin with. Sometimes, we can't extract or internalize all the contents, data and information all at once and I believe some are not reliable. So, we really need to understand first and comprehend well especially those difficult statements that we couldn't understand.

Choose Tutorial for Several Reasons!
1. Update with the latest techniques and strategies which the book cannot give.
2. Better comprehension once the topic progress.
3. Straight to the point/ Heart of the topic.
4. Simple explanation yet meaty meaning.
